Millie Bobby Brown Claps Back at Photographer on Red Carpet

Millie Bobby Brown is turning her sass up to 11.

While at the London premiere of Stranger Things season five on November 13th, the actress quickly responded to a photographer who told her to smile for the camera.

Millie walked the red carpet in a stunning black, strapless gown by Ashi Studio, choosing a serious expression over a smile. This led to a playful back-and-forth with someone nearby.

“Smile?” she retorted. “You smile!”

To show she was finished, the 21-year-old turned and walked away from the photographer with a confident stride.

Millie is known for quickly responding to criticism. Earlier this year, when people made rude comments about how she looked and accused her of aging poorly, she publicly challenged them.

In a recent Instagram post, she spoke about an issue that impacts all young women in the public eye. She explained that starting her career at age 10 meant she essentially grew up with the world watching, and it’s frustrating that people haven’t accepted her changes over time.

She explained that people seem to expect her to still look exactly as she did when she first appeared on Stranger Things, and because her appearance has changed, she feels like she’s being criticized or targeted.

Millie, who welcomed a baby girl with her husband Jake Bongiovi this summer, has spoken out against the “bullying” she’s been experiencing. She expressed her distress over people focusing on and criticizing her appearance and personal decisions.

She explained that some people are upset when a woman confidently defines her own path and growth, rather than conforming to others’ expectations. She firmly stated she won’t change herself to please those who can’t accept her self-expression, and she won’t be made to feel ashamed of her appearance or how she chooses to present herself.

Millie Bobby Brown, who became famous at age 12 with her role in Stranger Things in 2016, has been getting a lot of attention for her appearance as she’s grown into her 20s. Some fans have commented that she looks and dresses older than her age. In a March 2025 Instagram video, Millie responded by pointing out a larger problem women face. She explained that growing up in the public eye means people expect her to stay the same as when she first appeared on Stranger Things. She feels she’s being unfairly criticized for simply growing up. Millie specifically called out those who try to bring others down for attention. She firmly stated she won’t change herself to meet unrealistic expectations or be shamed for her appearance. She hopes people will do better, not just for her, but for all young women who deserve to grow up without being judged for simply existing.

Okay, so after seeing Millie at the Electric State premiere in February 2025, the internet just attacked her! People were leaving the meanest comments, seriously! One person actually said they had to double-check if she’d even turned 21, claiming she looked 40! Forty! Can you believe it? Another one just said she looked ‘older than ever’ – so rude! But then British Vogue came to the rescue with this amazing article, ‘No One Cares How Old You Think Millie Bobby Brown Looks,’ and honestly, it was everything. Millie even reshared it on her Instagram story with just a simple ‘Thank you,’ and it felt like she was speaking directly to all of us, like she appreciated the support. It just made me love her even more, honestly. She deserves to just be without everyone commenting on her appearance!

Millie, the actress known for Enola Holmes, quickly responded to criticism after she posted a mirror selfie in December 2024. Some commenters accused her of trying to look older, but she fired back with a message on Instagram: “Women grow!! Not sorry about it :)”

In an interview from March 2024, TikToker Max Balegde asked Millie Bobby Brown, founder of Florence by Mills, about fans noticing her British accent seemed to be fading. Brown explained that as an actress who grew up in the public eye and in America, she naturally adapts her speech to mimic those around her. She acknowledged she does sound more American when she’s with her fiancé, Jake Bongiovi, or on shows like Jimmy Fallon’s, but says this happens automatically. She emphasized that her British accent is stronger when she’s back in England, and that she doesn’t intentionally change how she speaks. She apologized if it bothered anyone, but added that she’s doing her best.

Millie Bobby Brown noticed a shift in how people treated her after she turned 18 in 2022. She discussed this experience on the The Guilty Feminist podcast, explaining the challenges of growing up under public scrutiny. She pointed out the frustrating reality of young women being sexualized, something she’s dealt with for years. She recalled being criticized at age 16 for wearing a dress with a low neckline to an awards show, feeling it was inappropriate to focus on her appearance instead of the talented people at the event. As a result, she decided to stop sharing personal details on social media and instead use her platform to empower others. She wants to create a space where young people, especially those who might misrepresent their age online, can find positive influence and avoid exploitation.
