Tom Cruise is often overlooked as someone who successfully launches long-running film series. Although many of his earlier films are now considered classics, most were standalone movies – he explored a story once and then moved on. The notable exception is Mission: Impossible. Cruise enjoyed playing Ethan Hunt in the 1996 film so much that he returned to the role seven more times, with the latest installment, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, coming out in 2025. As Hunt prepares to retire, it’s understandable that audiences are looking for a new action hero to take his place.
Many people turn to Paramount+ to rewatch favorites, and Top Gun: Maverick is consistently one of the most-streamed movies, just like when it was in theaters in 2022. But after watching the same film repeatedly, viewers often need something new. Luckily, the Jack Reacher series is gaining popularity on multiple streaming platforms, offering a fresh option for entertainment.
Alongside Top Gun: Maverick at the top of Paramount+’s most-watched list is Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, the 2016 film where Lee Child’s character partners with Cobie Smulders, an Army major who needs help. The original Jack Reacher movie from 2012 is also popular, currently appearing in Netflix’s worldwide Top 10.
The first two Jack Reacher movies weren’t initially praised by critics. Many people disliked them because Tom Cruise wasn’t physically imposing enough compared to how the character is described in the books. However, opinions are changing now, and while Cruise is likely a big reason why, another actor also deserves recognition for the shift in perception.
Jack Reacher Is More Popular Than Ever

Both Jack Reacher movies were financially successful, each earning over $100 million at the box office. However, despite Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie having ideas for a third film, one wasn’t made. Instead, Prime Video decided to create a TV series based on Lee Child’s novels. Alan Ritchson was cast as Reacher, a choice that pleased many fans of the books, as he is much taller than Cruise.
The Prime Video series Reacher has released three seasons, with the most recent finale airing in May 2025. A fourth season is being filmed now, so it will likely be a while before it’s available. Alan Ritchson, who stars as Reacher, is getting support from Tom Cruise, who will also be promoting his own past work by highlighting some of his lesser-known films.
I’m a big fan of Tom Cruise, and I was wondering if anyone else has checked out his Jack Reacher films? I’d love to hear your thoughts – let’s chat about them over on the ComicBook Forum!
