Superman-Inspired Dark Horror Movie To Stream on Netflix

The horror film Brightburn, which offers a scary twist on the classic Superman story, is coming to Netflix. Directed by David Yarovesky, the movie stars Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, and a supporting cast. It reimagines the superhero’s origins as a dark and terrifying tale.

Brightburn to stream on Netflix very soon

The 2019 horror superhero-inspired film, Brightburn, is coming to Netflix.

As per What’s on Netflix, the movie will arrive on the streaming platform on December 1, 2025.

Brightburn offers a chilling take on the classic Superman story. The film follows Tori and Kyle, who happily adopt a baby boy named Brandon, unaware he’s an alien. Their lives take a terrifying turn when Brandon discovers his powers and begins using them for malicious purposes.

Despite costing only $6 million to make, the movie Brightburn received a mixed reaction from both critics and viewers. It earned a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer (based on critic reviews) and a 67% score on the Popcornmeter (reflecting audience opinions).

Although the film received mixed reviews and didn’t perform well in theaters, discussions about a sequel took place. However, producer James Gunn announced in April 2024 that a sequel was probably not going to happen. He explained on Threads that the complicated ownership of the film’s rights – he only controls half of them – makes it unlikely to ever be made.

In March 2025, director David Yarovesky shared with ScreenRant his eagerness to collaborate with James Gunn again. He noted Gunn’s focus on the Superman movie, jokingly referencing their previous work on Brightburn. Yarovesky made it clear he’d immediately accept an offer to make another Brightburn film, and that he’s keen to work with Gunn again in the future.

Even though fans are hoping for a Brightburn sequel, the filmmakers haven’t announced anything officially yet.
