In 2025, horror films have been dominating Hollywood. As audiences grow tired of superhero movies, they’re seeking original and engaging stories. Ryan Coogler, a director famous for his work on comic book films, kicked off the year with Sinners, a unique vampire movie that creatively uses music. Then, Zach Cregger followed up with Weapons, a summer blockbuster that taps into a truly frightening idea: children who are possessed.
As the year winds down and Halloween is over, there aren’t many scary movies playing in theaters. Luckily, streaming services are filling the gap with great horror selections. Tubi, for example, has a strong collection including popular franchises like Terrifier and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But right now, their biggest hit is a movie that wasn’t very popular when it first came out over 23 years ago: Ghost Ship.
Despite harsh reviews, Ghost Ship was a surprising box office success, earning $68 million. While the film had an interesting idea – a salvage team finding a long-lost ship with a spooky history – many critics felt it focused too much on graphic violence and lacked a strong story. However, today’s streaming audiences might find Ghost Ship more appealing because it’s good at creating immediate excitement and keeping viewers hooked.
Ghost Ship‘s Opening Is One of the Most Memorable of All Time

The beginning of Ghost Ship is surprisingly cheerful. The film opens with a party on the MS Antonia Graza, and everyone seems to be having a good time, unaware of the horror to come. However, a shadowy figure disrupts the fun by activating a mechanism that causes the ship to malfunction. A broken wire swings dangerously through the crowd, and the movie initially shows everyone frozen in place. It quickly becomes horrifyingly clear why – they’ve all been sliced in half.
While the story after the exciting opening of Ghost Ship isn’t particularly compelling – it involves a lot of deaths and a complicated plot about collecting souls – that strong start is enough to make the movie watchable. There’s so much horror content available now that it needs a good hook, and this film delivers that initial intrigue.
