Ubisoft reportedly canceled plans for a brand new Splinter Cell game for a surprising reason. While a remake of the original Splinter Cell is currently in development with no confirmed release date, fans haven’t seen a completely new Splinter Cell title in over a decade, since 2013’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist. Apparently, Ubisoft once intended to create a direct sequel to Blacklist, but the project was changed into a different game that didn’t succeed.
A recent Bloomberg report reveals that Ubisoft San Francisco began developing a new Splinter Cell game in 2017. However, Ubisoft executives reportedly lost enthusiasm for the project after several months. They shifted their focus to creating a game with ongoing, long-term revenue potential. As a result, the original Splinter Cell game was canceled and significantly altered.
The ideas behind this Splinter Cell game eventually led to the creation of XDefiant, a multiplayer shooter Ubisoft released in 2024. Designed to be similar to Call of Duty, XDefiant was free-to-play, but it wasn’t successful. Low player numbers led Ubisoft to shut the game down just over a year after its release.
Ubisoft prioritized creating a game they could continually update and monetize, and unfortunately, that meant canceling a potentially great new Splinter Cell game. It’s disappointing because the result of that decision was XDefiant. Even if a new Splinter Cell wasn’t a massive financial success, it would have at least satisfied fans who have been eagerly waiting for a continuation of the series. Now, fans are left hoping Sam Fisher will eventually return in a future game.
The Splinter Cell remake is still being worked on by Ubisoft Toronto. It’s been almost four years since it was first announced, and we haven’t received an update in a while, so we can likely expect to see some news about the project soon.
