It’s become common for animated movies aimed at kids to include subtle jokes for the adults watching with them. Since some of these films can be a bit simplistic for grown-ups, it’s a thoughtful way for filmmakers to ensure everyone enjoys the movie. This often shows up as quick visual gags – like the improvisational comedy Robin Williams brought to Aladdin in the 90s – or clever innuendo, such as the jokes about characters in Mulan based on her secret identity.
Animated films have always been around, but jokes aimed at adults weren’t typical in children’s movies during the time of Walt Disney. This trend really took off after the movie Shrek, which boldly challenged traditional fairy tales with its humor. By the 2010s, animated movies were openly including jokes for grown-ups.
6) The Angry Birds Movie

The 2016 film, The Angry Birds Movie, contains a surprising amount of adult humor. While the story centers around pigs stealing eggs, the movie is filled with jokes and references that children likely won’t understand. For example, the character Chuck, voiced by Josh Gad, makes a suggestive comment about ‘laying some eggs tonight.’ Beyond that, the film cleverly uses bird-related puns to subtly replace curse words. A notable instance is when Red, after being sentenced to anger management, responds to the news with the phrase “Pluck my life.”
5) The Boss Baby

The movie The Boss Baby, with its unusual mix of babies and corporate life, includes some jokes aimed at adults. There are several references to alcohol, presented like a nod to the show Mad Men and its depiction of workplace drinking. However, the most suggestive scene involves the Boss Baby offering a pacifier to his older brother. Beyond just hinting at a psychedelic experience, the scene is filled with strong sexual innuendo, including lines like, “I want you to suck it,” “It’s not where it’s been, it’s where it will take you,” and “C’mon faster.”
4) Cars 3

I love animated movies, but sometimes they sneak in stuff that goes right over kids’ heads! In Cars 3, there’s this funny bit where the cars tell each other to keep the language clean because it’s ‘family night,’ but then later, Lightning McQueen says, “Life’s a beach and then you drive!” Now, for the kids, that probably just sounds like a silly, motivational line. But as an adult, it’s very obviously a playful twist on the much darker saying, “Life’s a bitch and then you die.” It’s a clever little moment, even if it’s a bit unexpected in a kids’ movie!
3) Rango

Even though Rango is a PG-rated animated film from 2011, its western style and filmmaking techniques make it feel more like a movie for adults than children. While it includes jokes referencing films like The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Rango also features surprisingly edgy humor. For example, when someone mentions “Thespians,” the response is, “Thespians? But that’s illegal in seven states!” Other jokes appear randomly, such as, “It’s a puzzle! It’s like a big old mammogram!”
2) Toy Story 3

Like all Pixar films, Toy Story 3 is very family-friendly – it earned a “G” rating for a reason. However, like other movies from the studio, it includes a few subtle jokes that are more for the adults to catch. For example, Barbie playfully says to Ken, “Nice ascot.” But a much more risqué moment happens when Mr. Potato Head tells Lotso, “Nobody takes my wife’s mouth except me.” While kids will likely take that line at face value, adults might interpret it with a more suggestive meaning.
1) Zootopia

Because Zootopia features a rabbit as one of its main characters, it quickly includes jokes about rabbits reproducing. This is first shown with Judy Hopps’ large family, and then again when she makes a playful math joke, saying, “I’m just a dumb bunny, but we’re good at multiplying.”
