A famous manga artist from Shonen Jump is starting a completely new series – not a continuation or spin-off of anything they’ve done before. Shonen Jump is a very competitive magazine because it comes out weekly and constantly has to compete for readers’ attention. This leads to a lot of series being canceled (over ten so far this year!), but it also means creators often get several chances to find a hit with the magazine.
Even incredibly successful creators like Hiroyuki Takei face new beginnings. He first appeared in Shonen Jump with Butsu Zone in 1997, then gained widespread recognition with Shaman King in 1998. Now, he’s preparing to launch another new series in a different magazine later this year. Unlike some of his recent work, this series won’t be a direct sequel or spin-off of Shaman King, though it could still be related in some way.
Shaman King Creator to Return With Brand New Series
Manga artist Hiroyuki Takei is starting a new series called JURO in Shogakukan’s CoroCiao magazine on December 19th in Japan. While international release plans haven’t been announced yet, Takei has shared a first look sketch of the series. The new manga will be set in a science fiction world that also features spirits, but details are currently limited.
The main character will control a giant robot using the power of spirits, which is a familiar theme from Takei’s long history with the Shaman King series. Since the original Shaman King ended prematurely, Takei has continued to create new stories for various publishers, often expanding on the Shaman King universe with sequels or stories about supporting characters. However, this new project is a completely original work from the creator.
Will This Be Different From Shaman King?
While Takei has remained busy with various projects, his last completely original series, Nekogahara, concluded in 2018. He then revisited his popular Shaman King series with Shaman King: The Super Star, which unfortunately finished last year as well. This pattern seems to be a recurring issue for Takei – he’s excellent at starting new stories, but often struggles to bring them to a satisfying conclusion.
Takei’s popular series, Shaman King, is known for its complicated ending. Though initially put on hold, it wasn’t truly finished until years later when Takei revisited the story and provided a conclusion. He then continued the narrative with sequels, extending the storyline even further. JURO feels like a fresh start, but it also shares a similar spirit with Shaman King. Whether it can establish its own identity separate from that franchise remains to be seen.
