Netflix Just Released a Prequel to One of DreamWorks Animation’s Hit Movie Franchises

DreamWorks Animation is well-known for expanding its popular movies into larger franchises. We’ve seen this with films like How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda, which both got TV series between movie releases. They even created a whole separate franchise around a supporting character from Shrek – Puss in Boots. More recently, DreamWorks has been building up another promising series, even creating a prequel series for it on Netflix.

Netflix recently launched a new kids’ show called The Bad Guys: Breaking In. It explains how the popular team of criminals-turned-heroes from The Bad Guys and The Bad Guys 2 first met and what led them to a life of crime.

The new series, Breaking In, happens before the events of the first Bad Guys movie, making it a perfect starting point for kids who discover it on Netflix. It’s nine episodes long, with each episode lasting around 25 minutes.

Just so you know, the voices of the characters in this show, featuring the same crew of lovable outlaws from The Bad Guys movie, will be different. The original movie cast, including Sam Rockwell and Marc Maron, didn’t return for the TV series. Michael Godere now voices Wolf (previously Sam Rockwell), and Chris Diamantopoulos takes over as Snake (previously Marc Maron). The roles of Piranha, Shark, and Ms. Tarantula are now voiced by Ezekiel Ajeigbe, Raul Ceballos, and Mallory Low, respectively, replacing Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, and Awkwafina.

This isn’t the first time The Bad Guys has expanded to television. Netflix has already released several holiday specials from the series, including The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Holiday in 2023 and The Bad Guys: Haunted Heist last year. Instead of a new holiday special in 2025, Netflix released a full season of The Bad Guys: Breaking In.

DreamWorks’ The Bad Guys has proven to be a solid success with two movies released so far. The first film earned over $250 million in 2022, and the recent sequel brought in $237 million. While these numbers aren’t as high as some of DreamWorks’ biggest hits like How to Train Your Dragon, the relatively low production costs mean both The Bad Guys films have been profitable for the studio.
