Please be aware that this article contains spoilers for the WITCHRIV manga. 2025 has been a challenging year for Shonen Jump, with several series being canceled due to declining sales and viewership. Launched in 2014, Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ is a popular digital platform known for hosting hit manga like Dandadan, Spy x Family, and Kaiju No. 8, among others. Because Shonen manga is so popular worldwide, competition is fierce, and Shonen Jump+ aims to publish the most promising new series. However, this also means that many potentially great manga struggle to find a large audience.
Shonen manga covers a wide range of genres, including fantasy, sports, thrillers, and action. The best fantasy action series can become incredibly popular. While Shueisha publishes many manga throughout the year, their recent biggest success is Ichi the Witch from Weekly Shonen Jump. This manga is still being released and is gaining popularity. Meanwhile, another witch-themed manga, WITCTRIV by Hakuri, which is published on Shonen Jump+, has received a lot of positive feedback since its first chapter and has the potential to become a major hit as well.
What Is the Plot of WITCHRIV?

This story takes place in a world where people fear magic and those who can use it, creating a deep divide between ordinary citizens and mages. Nona grew up hearing her mother constantly warn her to hide her magical abilities, as mages are hunted by the Bureau of Magic Surveillance. Even a small suspicion can be deadly for a mage, who could lose their life simply for being who they are.
Mages are often punished for using magic, even for small things, but they must use it regularly to stay healthy. Nona ignored her mother’s warning and used her magic to fix her friend Lovi’s glasses, hoping to save Lovi from trouble. This one act of kindness led to Lovi being captured by the Bureau, which exposed Nona’s magical abilities. Lovi and her family were killed, but Nona narrowly escaped thanks to her mother, who used powerful magic to help them flee.
Another terrible event happens while a mother and daughter are trying to escape, revealing the shocking truth about the Bureau and their dangerous scheme. She falls into the Bureau’s trap and has to find a way out. The story then follows Nona as she bravely continues searching for her mother in a hostile world determined to defeat her.
WITCHRIV Continues to Surprise With Each Chapter

So far, four chapters of the manga have been released and can be read on the official Manga Plus app. While the basic idea isn’t entirely new, the way the story is being told is really impressive. It takes place in a world where different groups can’t get along, and a stronger group is being controlled by a dishonest government that doesn’t really care about its people. The story immediately shows that the main character isn’t perfect – she’s just lonely and wants friends after having to keep her true identity a secret.
I’m really invested in this story! It follows a girl who quickly learns how tough the world can be, and she sets off on this incredible quest to find her mother. It’s still early days, so where things go from here is a mystery, and I’m excited to see how the world itself is fleshed out. But honestly, a story with a strong female lead like this? It’s bound to grab people’s attention. I’m especially looking forward to seeing how Nona grows and changes after everything she’s going through – it promises to be a really powerful arc.
The beginning of this series was fantastic, but Shonen Jump+ tends to cancel shows more quickly than Weekly Shonen Jump because it features so many different titles. WITCHRIV has a lot of promise, but it will likely stay relatively unknown for a few months until the compiled volume is published.
