Boston Legal: The Perfect Show for Monk Fans

After two successful years of Monk entertaining audiences as a uniquely funny and quirky detective show, a character who shared a similar personality appeared in ABC’s Boston Legal. Throughout much of the series, Adrian Monk mostly dealt with his anxieties on his own, relying on the support of his assistants, Sharona and Natalie. However, the unconventional lawyer Alan Shore would have likely understood what Monk was going through.

As a big fan of detective shows, I’ve always noticed something interesting about Monk. The strongest episodes, to me, really remind me of Boston Legal. Both shows cleverly show how a character’s quirks – whether it’s Monk’s obsessive-compulsive disorder or Alan Shore’s particular personality – can be both a blessing and a curse. They both really explore how those traits help and hinder the main character, which makes for compelling viewing.

If you love the quirky charm and humor of Monk, you’ll likely enjoy Boston Legal. This legal drama is consistently excellent, offering a similar blend of wit, heartwarming moments, and realistic portrayals of the legal world.

Boston Legal Is The Perfect Show For Monk Fans

If you enjoy Monk and are looking for another funny and engaging legal drama, Boston Legal is a great choice. It tackles serious issues with a light touch, featuring clever plots, excellent comedic delivery, and a truly charming main character – one of the best in the genre.

If this show feels similar to others you’ve seen, it’s likely because Monk and Boston Legal share a lot of the same qualities. Fans of one will probably enjoy the other. It’s hard to think of two shows from the same time period that would appeal to the same viewers more.

Both shows have a knack for casting supporting actors in unexpected ways. Like Monk, which reimagines Ted Levine (known for his role in The Silence of the Lambs) as a patient police captain, Boston Legal will make you see William Shatner in a whole new light. He’s the perfect comedic partner to James Spader’s Alan Shore.

Alan Shore & Adrian Monk Are Remarkably Similar Characters

James Spader’s performance as Alan Shore in the last season of The Practice directly led to the creation of Boston Legal, a spin-off that stood out because of his quirky and unusual character. Similarly, the show Monk wouldn’t be as compelling or emotionally resonant without the wide range of anxieties and quirks displayed by its main character.

Throughout the series, Adrian Monk battles numerous phobias, particularly a fear of germs, heights, and needles. In contrast, Alan Shore from Boston Legal experiences frightening night terrors. While Monk avoids dentists at all costs, Shore has a constant fear of clowns.

When working on a case, the two become completely consumed by it, letting it dominate their lives. They also have a habit of using very unusual methods, but they’re both exceptionally skilled at their jobs. They consistently manage to persuade their coworkers that their results make their unconventional approach worthwhile.

Monk & Shore Could Have Been Best Friends If They Met Onscreen

Adrian Monk and Alan Shore, despite both being fantastic TV characters, never appeared together on screen because they were on different shows and networks. It’s too bad, really – they probably would have been great friends. Actor Tony Shalhoub has pointed out that his character, Monk, struggles with social situations, and that’s true of Alan Shore as well.

Though initially wary of each other, the uniquely brilliant minds of Adrian Monk and Alan Shore would likely find common ground in their shared awkwardness. With both Monk and Boston Legal off the air for nearly twenty years, a special crossover sketch featuring Tony Shalhoub and James Spader would be a fun surprise – if they were interested!
