So, I’ve been hearing some chatter that PlayStation might be done releasing their big PS5 games on PC. Apparently, after a few releases that didn’t quite hit the mark, they’re rethinking the strategy. Jez Corden from Windows Central – he’s usually pretty reliable with this stuff – said a source told him this is happening.
According to a reliable source, PlayStation may be scaling back its plans to release games on PC, despite recent speculation. While images suggesting cross-platform compatibility and cross-buy options were discovered in older versions of the PlayStation software, they are reportedly from outdated builds and won’t be implemented. This contradicts the idea that PlayStation was trying to follow Steam’s successful PC gaming model, as suggested by recent rumors.
I don’t focus on what PlayStation is doing, as it’s not part of my usual reporting. However, I sometimes learn about PlayStation through my research on Microsoft. It seems releasing games on PC didn’t significantly impact PlayStation’s overall success. Corden believes this is because PlayStation launched those PC games too late, and Sony might start focusing more on exclusive titles, similar to Nintendo.
That approach would likely be used for Sony’s big, story-driven single-player games, like Ghost of Yōtei, but not for their ongoing “service games,” which they’ve already said will release simultaneously on PlayStation 5 and PC. The most recent large first-party game to come out on Steam was The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. It’s worth noting that Lost Soul Aside, Midnight Murder Club, and Stellar Blade were created by independent studios, not directly by Sony.
Honestly, looking at how many people are actually playing games like LEGO Horizon Adventures and Returnal, it’s not surprising. Even big exclusives like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 didn’t quite hit the same player numbers as the last game.
