A new TV adaptation of Sue Townsend’s classic book, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13¾, is being developed, forty years after the original ITV series first appeared on screens.
According to The Sun, the BBC is developing a new version of the show, with filming possibly starting in early 2026 and the series expected to premiere later that year.
The show aims to be very funny, but also stay true to the spirit of the original work by Townsend.
The first book in the Adrian Mole series, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13¾, is a funny story told as a diary, focusing on a teenage boy who thinks of himself as very clever.
The show originally debuted on television in 1985, with Gian Sammarco playing the main character. Stephen Moore, Julie Walters, and Beryl Reid also starred in important roles.
In 1987, ITV broadcast a TV series continuing the story from the second book, The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole. Lulu played Adrian’s mother in this series, taking over the role previously held by Walters.
According to The Sun, the upcoming adaptation is still being finalized, but development is progressing well and they are currently choosing the actors.
