The Sequel to $715M Sci-Fi Masterpiece Gets a Major (& Exciting) Update From Its Biggest Star

Being a Sci-Fi movie fan is great right now. Although 2025 hasn’t been packed with releases in the genre – despite a strong decade overall – the year is ending on a high note. We’ve seen successful additions to the Predator series with Predator: Badlands, a lively adaptation of Stephen King’s The Running Man by Edgar Wright, and still to come is Avatar: Fire & Ash in December, which could be another massive blockbuster for James Cameron. But these are just the highlights – even more exciting things are planned for next year and beyond.

2026 promises to be a fantastic year for science fiction fans, with new films planned from renowned directors like Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg. A particularly anticipated release is Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three, especially considering Dune: Part Two is already considered one of the best sci-fi movies of the 21st century. Recently, star Timothée Chalamet announced on X (formerly Twitter, via The Hollywood Reporter) that he has finished filming his scenes for the sequel, which is great news for fans.

Timothée Chalamet recently chatted with Adam Sandler about his role as Paul Atreides and shared that he finished filming the third Dune movie just four days ago.

Dune 3 Is One Of Many Exciting Sci-Fi Sequels In The Works

Timothée Chalamet finishing his work on Dune 3 is encouraging for the film, giving the production team ample time for editing and special effects. With a planned release in December 2026 – competing with Avengers: Doomsday – there’s over a year to complete the visually complex movie. However, Chalamet also feels emotional about finishing, as it likely means he’s done playing Paul Atreides, and director Denis Villeneuve doesn’t anticipate making any further Dune films after this one.

Hopefully, Dune: Part Three will be a satisfying conclusion to the series. While the source material, Dune Messiah, is even more complex and unusual than the previous books, director Denis Villeneuve is a highly skilled science fiction filmmaker, so we can expect another visually impressive film. Plus, this isn’t the only sequel sci-fi fans have to look forward to.

Beyond the recently released Avatar: Fire & Ash, James Cameron is planning two more Avatar films, extending the series into the 2030s. A sequel to Will Smith’s I Am Legend, starring Michael B. Jordan, is also in the works and could offer a compelling continuation of that story. Alien: Romulus is getting a direct sequel, and given the success of recent films, more Predator movies are likely, potentially leading to another Alien vs. Predator film. Fans are still hoping for Edge of Tomorrow 2 with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, and the Blade Runner universe will continue with Blade Runner 2099, a new series on Prime Video.

Beyond sequels, several exciting science fiction movies are coming soon. Ridley Scott has a post-apocalyptic film called The Dog Stars, and Steven Spielberg is making a UFO movie that feels reminiscent of his classic work from the 70s and 80s. Masters of the Universe could also bring that franchise back to life on the big screen. One of the most anticipated releases is Project Hail Mary, based on the novel by The Martian‘s Andy Weir, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and starring Ryan Gosling – it’s shaping up to be a major event in 2026. Overall, science fiction fans have plenty to look forward to at the cinema.

Dune: Part Three will be released in theaters on December 18th, 2026.
