The series Welcome to Derry has been carefully investigating the beginnings and boundaries of the creature known as Pennywise. Earlier episodes suggested that Pennywise is stuck within the town of Derry, unable to leave even though it could find more victims elsewhere. The show also hinted that the local Native American tribe has known Pennywise’s true origins for hundreds of years. The latest episode finally revealed this history, changing what we thought we knew about Pennywise and confirming that it’s essentially trapped in Derry.
Warning: Spoilers below for IT: Welcome to Derry, Episode 4
The latest episode of IT: Welcome to Derry explores the history of the Shokopiwah tribe, revealing an ancient legend about the creature known as IT. According to their stories, IT arrived on Earth millions of years ago, trapped inside a meteor. When the meteor crashed, it cracked open IT’s prison, releasing the creature but also weakening it. The Shokopiwah were the first to encounter IT, which they called the “Galloo,” and quickly learned to stay away from the woods where it lived. This kept their tribe safe and limited the monster’s reach. Importantly, they also discovered that pieces of the meteor could be made into weapons, and they created a special knife to protect themselves from IT.

For centuries, a delicate balance kept a powerful creature contained. But when settlers arrived in the area now known as Derry, they disregarded warnings from the local tribe and unknowingly fed the creature, awakening its strength. This allowed it to potentially escape and roam free. To prevent disaster, a group of young Shokopiwah warriors came up with a plan. Using a knife made from a meteorite, they entered the creature’s lair and collected thirteen pieces of its prison. They then used these pieces to create a magical barrier around the woods, reinforcing the creature’s confinement.
As a film buff, I always loved the backstory about the Shokopiwah people – they’ve been protecting those totems for ages, basically keeping this ancient evil trapped. It’s fascinating how the town of Derry eventually grew up around it, unknowingly providing the creature with a constant source of…well, food. While the story gives us a lot to work with, it still leaves me with questions about the monster itself – there are definitely gaps in its history that I’d love to see filled in.
IT: Welcome to Derry Still Hasn’t Explained Two of the Biggest Pennywise’s Rules

The backstory in IT: Welcome to Derry brings up some key questions about the creature’s history. According to the Shokopiwah legend, it used to actively hunt and feed on adults, which is how it got stronger. This suggests that the creature’s 27-year periods of sleep and its focus on children weren’t always how it operated. Something must have happened after it first arrived that made it hibernate for long periods and start targeting children, but the show hasn’t explained what that was yet.
In Stephen King’s novel IT, Pennywise goes through a 27-year cycle, which is presented as a natural period of dormancy, similar to how insects hibernate. The book also states that Pennywise targets children because their fears are simpler, making them easier to exploit and more enjoyable for the creature to feed on. However, the origin story told in the series Welcome to Derry changes this, suggesting these characteristics weren’t always part of Pennywise’s nature. This leaves viewers wondering if the show will continue to add new details, ultimately offering a completely different explanation for how Pennywise’s established behaviors and rules developed.
New episodes of IT: Welcome to Derry premiere on HBO every Sunday.
