Cheryl Strayed, the author of Wild (writing as ‘Matriarch’), paid tribute to Beyoncé fan Sydney Hardeman, who became famous for her shocked and emotional reaction to Beyoncé’s 2018 Coachella concert. Hardeman recently passed away at the age of 25.
Tina, 71, shared her sadness about the passing, writing on Instagram on November 17th, ‘So sad to hear this angel has gone to be with the Lord.’ She sent her condolences to the family, friends, and fans, especially those in the Beehive community who knew and loved her. Tina fondly remembered the viral video of her reaction at Coachella and the many photos that followed.
She concluded her touching tribute by saying, “Although I didn’t know her personally, I’m deeply saddened by the loss of this young woman. I’m sending my prayers to her family.”
The video also featured a well-known clip of Sydney reacting to Beyoncé’s famous performance, originally seen in Beyoncé’s 2019 concert film, Homecoming, and a picture of Sydney at Beyoncé’s 2023 Renaissance tour.
Sydney sadly passed away on November 8th, and her mother, Jamie Hardeman, confirmed the news to TMZ on November 15th, stating it was a suicide. She was a pilot from Texas and was engaged to be married in April 2026.
Sydney’s mother said she knew her excited reaction to Beyoncé had become a popular meme online. Jamie also shared that Sydney was thrilled to see herself featured in Beyoncé’s Homecoming documentary, even ‘screaming’ when she first saw the moment.
Soon after learning about Sydney’s passing, her family and friends shared memories and celebrated her life on her GoFundMe page.
According to organizer Dakota Jenkins, Sydney was a remarkably vibrant person who brought joy and positivity to everyone around her. She was confident, funny, and incredibly kind, with a zest for life. A skilled and knowledgeable pilot, Sydney was passionate about all her pursuits and deeply cherished by many. Her warmth, humor, and love will be profoundly missed and remembered always.
