Alan Carr was already well-loved by the public, but he jokingly calls himself a “national traitor” after winning the reality show The Celebrity Traitors.
Alan Carr, the 49-year-old comedian, presenter, and writer, is currently enjoying a surge in popularity. His semi-autobiographical sitcom, Changing Ends, which is set in 1980s Northampton, and his Saturday night quiz show, Alan Carr’s Picture Slam, are both airing now, with more television projects on the way.
But what about those rumours that he could soon be waltzing into Strictly to take TV’s top job?
Oh my gosh, you won’t believe this! Apparently, someone who was a major ‘traitor’ on that crazy reality show, The Celebrity Traitors, actually had to leave the country to avoid all the attention while it was airing! I mean, can you imagine? It just proves how obsessed everyone became with trying to figure out who was betraying who. It’s wild!
What do you make of the reaction to your victory?

Out of all your celebrity mates, who do you think would make a good Traitor?
Michelle Ogundehin, a judge on Interior Design Masters, would be an excellent choice, though she’d likely strongly disapprove of any bad design choices – maybe even dramatically! She’s the type to fix a flawed area, like covering a poor wall finish with a fresh layer of textured coating.
With the castle behind him and his show, Changing Ends, returning, where is young Alan at in the year 1989?
Oliver Savell, who plays Alan, has grown a lot – his voice has gotten much deeper, which I envy! The characters who used to bully Alan have mostly stopped, probably because there’s only so much damage you can do to someone’s glasses. Alan is doing okay for a while, and then he meets Jake while shopping at Athena. He instantly falls for him, just like I did in real life. It really captures that intense and confusing mix of feelings when you start to fall in love with someone.
Is it hard to watch your adolescence being replayed?
The recent episodes made me cry during the bullying scenes, and I’ve heard the final series is even more emotionally intense. This season also has some awkward moments with Alan’s crush – it’s funny how oblivious you can be at the time! It reminded me of when I unexpectedly ran into a boy I liked from school, Athena, about seven or eight years ago at a cash machine in Northampton. I was instantly flustered, even after all this time.
What advice do you give to Oliver on playing you as a child?
I mostly let him improvise, but I occasionally offer direction, especially when it comes to local references – he isn’t familiar with places like Semilong or Kingsthorpe, being from outside Northampton. There’s a really funny moment in the new show where his character unzips his purse. He manages to portray both an old woman and a young boy simultaneously. The show, ‘Changing Ends’, has the potential to run as long as ‘The Crown’, and perhaps in a few years, Ollie could play me in a setting similar to the ‘Traitors’ castle. When I’m older, I imagine Christopher Biggins or Brendan from ‘Coach Trip’ could play me.

Do you enjoy writing — is there anything else you’re working on?
I’ve always been fascinated by murder mysteries – I devoured books by authors like Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, and P.D. James, so I love a good plot twist. That’s probably why I enjoyed watching The Traitors; the show’s setting and premise felt familiar, like something I understood from reading those kinds of stories.
Wow, there’s so much good TV on right now! Between shows like Picture Slam, Interior Design Masters, Amanda & Alan’s Spanish Job, and of course, RuPaul’s Drag Race, I’m starting to wonder if I am a workaholic just to keep up with it all! Seriously, it’s a fantastic time to be a TV fan.
It’s important to seize opportunities while you can, because good times don’t last forever. I’ve been experiencing some incredibly surreal moments lately, like sharing tea with Mariah Carey after recording my podcast, ‘Life’s a Beach.’ We even took a photo together, and her assistant used a leaf blower to make sure her hair looked perfect – while my own hair was a bit of a mess!
There’s been talk about me potentially hosting Strictly Come Dancing, which is really flattering. I haven’t had any discussions with the BBC, though. Considering how much I sweated on I’m a Celebrity, you can imagine the scene if I were to host live on a Saturday night – people might slip in a puddle of sweat during the dances! It’s nice to be considered, but it would likely be far too stressful.
People are joking that I’m having a career resurgence after appearing on ‘Traitors,’ and honestly, it’s flattering, even if I’ve been performing for a long time! It’s funny – it feels like it took years to finally get noticed. I really enjoyed being on the show, and I’m glad people found me funny, but it does make you wonder what they thought of everything else I’ve done! Now, everyone wants me to recreate scenes from the show, especially wearing that cloak – it’s like I’m supposed to be a ‘Traitor’-themed character all the time.

You can watch seasons 1 and 2 of Changing Ends on ITVX. Season 3 will premiere on ITV1 at 10:05 PM on Sunday, November 23rd, 2025.
