DC Comics fans often focus on the most famous villains, like Joker or Darkseid – and they’re great when done well! However, these big names tend to overshadow other, lesser-known bad guys. This happens with heroes too, but we see minor villains even less often than B-list heroes. Not every villain can become a major, recurring threat, and that’s okay. There are plenty of cool, smaller-scale antagonists who deserve some attention.
I’ve always been drawn to lesser-known characters – maybe it’s their mysterious nature, or just a unique quality they possess. Either way, there are a lot of DC Comics villains who don’t get the same attention as big names like Brainiac or Black Manta, but are still fantastic. Let me share seven of my favorites with you.
7) Reactron

Most comic book fans know Metallo, Superman’s enemy with a heart made of kryptonite. Supergirl has a similar villain called Reactron. Originally a person with radiation-based powers, Reactron was enhanced with a heart of golden kryptonite, which briefly weakens Kryptonians like Supergirl.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Metallo, and I really like the thought of him having a teammate. I also think it would be interesting for Supergirl to have her own villain similar to Metallo, someone who might even be a bigger danger.
6) Killer Moth

If you ask a dedicated Batman fan online, they’ll likely rave about Killer Moth! He’s memorable with his striking name and surprisingly effective, over-the-top costume. Plus, he was originally designed as the criminal equivalent of Batman – he even had a moth-themed base and vehicle for a while!
Killer Moth hasn’t often been a central figure in Batman stories, with a memorable appearance in The Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing being a notable exception. But as a dedicated Batman fan who spends a lot of time online, I’ll say it again: Killer Moth is truly great.
5) Orca

Gotham City has seen its share of villains who are part human, part animal. While characters like Man-Bat and Killer Croc are well-known, one often-forgotten villain is Grace Balin, better known as Orca.
Balin was once a scientist who overcame paralysis using killer whale DNA, but now she’s a criminal. The DNA also gives her the ability to transform into a stronger, tougher, whale-like form. She doesn’t appear in many stories lately, which is a shame, because the character is really engaging and has a lot of potential.
4) Catman

It’s hard to think of a more successful supervillain makeover than the one Catman received. For years, Thomas Blake was a failure, but writer Gail Simone completely revitalized the character when she included him in the Secret Six series.
Catman is a highly skilled hunter and fighter, often considered as capable as Batman. While he presents a tough exterior, he’s not truly malicious, making the ‘villain’ label a bit of a stretch. He frequently conflicts with heroes, and it’s disappointing that those encounters haven’t been explored more recently.
3) Ocean Master

I might be biased since I really like Aquaman, but I think his brother, Ocean Master, doesn’t get enough credit either. Like Aquaman, Prince Orm is a very powerful Atlantean with a deep-seated dislike for people on land. He famously tried to take over the surface world in the “Throne of Atlantis” storyline.
Even though Aquaman isn’t always seen as a major hero, the villain Ocean Master demonstrates how quickly things could change and proves just how valuable Arthur is to the DC Universe.
2) Ultra-Humanite

It bothers me that Lex Luthor is always considered Superman’s biggest enemy. Ultra-Humanite was doing the ‘crazy scientist’ thing almost a year earlier! He’s incredibly intelligent and has essentially become immortal by transferring his mind into new bodies – sometimes even clones of apes. He really deserves more recognition.
Ultra-Humanite is a lot like Lex Luthor, but without the big ego, and I’d love to see more stories use him. Honestly, who wouldn’t enjoy seeing Superman battle a super-smart ape man now and then?
1. Mongul

Most people immediately think of Darkseid when they imagine powerful, evil rulers in space, and that’s understandable. However, just because Darkseid is better known doesn’t make him more dangerous – Mongul is actually one of the most frightening enemies Superman and the Justice League have ever faced.
Mongul rules Warworld, a brutal arena where he makes people fight for his amusement. While I respect Darkseid, I believe Mongul is a more compelling and direct enemy for heroes like Superman.
