Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary Raises the Stakes in Official Trailer

In 2018, Ryan Gosling appeared in his first film about space travel, First Man, but it wasn’t as popular as many had hoped. Now, he’s returning to the genre with a new project.

Okay, so I’m really excited about this new sci-fi flick, Project Hail Mary. If you loved The Martian – and I loved The Martian – you’ll be happy to know it’s based on another book by the same author, Andy Weir. The story centers around a massive problem facing Earth, and Ryan Gosling plays the guy who has to figure it all out. Amazon MGM Studios just dropped the second trailer, and it looks fantastic! The movie’s hitting theaters on March 20, 2026, and I’ve already marked my calendar.

The trailer opens with Ryan Gosling’s character, Ryland, first encountering the alien who becomes known as Rocky. It then flashes back to show Ryland’s life as a teacher, before he’s unexpectedly thrust into a mission to save Earth as an untrained astronaut.

Project Hail Mary is a movie based on the popular and award-winning 2021 novel of the same title. The story centers around Ryland Grace, a school teacher and former biologist, who finds himself on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there.

The story follows Ryland’s incredible adventure to space, where he must save Earth. While investigating why the sun is fading, he realizes he isn’t the only one on this mission. The first trailer for the film was a huge success, becoming the first completely original movie trailer to reach 400 million views in just one week.

The upcoming film, Project Hail Mary, is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the team behind Spider-Verse, and they also produced it. Drew Goddard, who previously adapted another Andy Weir novel, wrote the screenplay. The cast includes Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Lionel Boyce, and Ken Leung.

Project Hail Mary Received High Praise From Andy Weir

Andy Weir’s new novel, Project Hail Mary, follows the massive success of his first book, The Martian. Released a decade ago, The Martian was a huge financial and critical hit, earning $653.6 million globally on a $108 million budget. It was also nominated for seven Academy Awards and received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with a 91% approval rating from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite the expectations surrounding the new movie, author Andy Weir expressed strong approval. He shared his positive reaction at a 2025 San Diego Comic-Con panel, simply stating it was “really good.”

He shared that he’d watched some early versions of the movie and thought it was excellent, enthusiastically telling everyone, “It’s really good.”

He praised the directors, saying they were all incredibly talented and he was thrilled with the final result. He felt fortunate to have worked with such a skilled team across the board. They specifically waited for Drew to become available, as they had to wait several months for him to complete a prior commitment.

Project Hail Mary premieres in theaters on Mar. 20, 2026.
