Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the season 2 finale of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters! The second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has concluded, and the final episode successfully wraps up existing plot threads while hinting at future developments within the Monsterverse. Specifically, episode 9 revealed the motivations of Isabel, the daughter of Walter Simmons from Apex. She intends to control the Axis Mundi, hoping to exploit it for time travel and financial gain.
Kentaro is helping Isabel with a specific purpose: to revive his father, Hiroshi. Hiroshi’s death was a major turning point in the series, and a previous flashback revealed he vanished into the Axis Mundi through a tear in reality, leaving Cate and Kentaro for a year. There’s a possibility that a version of Hiroshi still exists within the Axis Mundi and can be rescued.
As a huge monster movie fan, it finally clicked for me that Billy figured out Skull Island wasn’t just some remote place – it was the central control point for this whole thing called the Axis Mundi. And the really twisted part? Apex wanted to use Corah’s code to basically force Titanus X into a brawl with Kong. If Kong lost, Skull Island would be defenseless, and Apex could move in and take over. The season finale really blew all of this wide open with some massive reveals, and honestly, it was a wild ride!
Who Is Rodan? Monarch’s New Titan & It’s Monsterverse Timeline Explained
The ending of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 totally blew me away! Just when I thought everything was wrapped up with Titanus X and Apex, Lee Shaw stumbled onto something new in Thailand. He was catching up with an old friend and showed him a sketch of a Titan. Then, he found out that a man named Kentaro and a woman named Isabel had been asking about the same Titan! It sounds like they think this Titan might be the answer to what they’re looking for, and it’s a really intriguing cliffhanger.
The Titan has the potential to unlock the Axis Mundi, allowing Isabel to research and manipulate time travel, and Kentaro to try and revive Hiroshi. A friend of Lee warns that they would destroy the world to achieve their goals. Later, the group enters the jungle, and Lee separates from the others. He’s the only one who witnesses the return of a colossal Titan named Rodan, who appears on top of a volcano, and Lee believes he’ll encounter the Titan again soon.
The season 2 finale of Monarch introduces Rodan to the Apple TV+ series, but he’s appeared in the Monsterverse films before. He first appeared in the 2019 movie Godzilla: King of the Monsters as one of King Ghidorah’s allies. After Ghidorah’s defeat, Rodan pledged his allegiance to Godzilla, recognizing him as the dominant monster. Interestingly, both in Monarch season 2 and his movie debut, Rodan is initially seen resting inside a volcano.
Is Young Lee Shaw Gone For Good?
Before introducing Rodan, the season 2 finale of Monarch concluded its main time travel plot. The older and younger versions of Lee Shaw connected through a radio under certain circumstances, and in the final episode, Wyatt Russell’s Lee physically appears. Keiko then realizes Lee was present at the Axis Mundi when she was, meaning he could have saved her and prevented years of separation from her family. Though initially angry, she eventually understands his decision.
Just before the dimensional tear seals shut, a younger version of Lee appears within its energy. Because Shaw and Dr. Suzuki previously used him as a test subject for the Titan phone, a combination of leftover energy, the return of Titan X to the Axis Mundi, and the presence of the older Lee create one last, powerful distortion. This gives Keiko a chance to say goodbye to a man she loved, even though the older Lee is a changed person. Though neither can hear the other, Kurt Russell’s character, Shaw, suddenly remembers he was saying goodbye to her all along.
Titan X’s Ending Explained
Titan X wasn’t a danger to anyone; she simply wanted to protect her egg and return home. Because Billy discovered the Axis Mundi’s central point – and as revealed in Monarch season 2, never truly left his family or Hiroshi – he was able to find a way to open a portal to the Axis Mundi. This allowed the team to successfully send Titan X back to her home.
Titan X and Kong first battled because Titan X was being controlled by Apex and acting aggressively. But simply seeing Titan X’s egg was enough to break that control, revealing that these creatures aren’t necessarily the monsters everyone believes them to be. Realizing Titan X meant no harm, Kong allowed it to leave.
What’s Next For Monarch’s Human Characters In Legacy Of Monsters Season 3
A third season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters hasn’t been confirmed yet, but the ending—where Lee Shaw discovered Rodan—strongly suggests Apple TV plans to continue the story. The team, including Keiko, Cate, Corah, and Tim, is staying together at Monarch and refocusing on their original mission. Also, Monarch is secretly hiding the fact that Keiko is alive.
It’s logical that if Cate survives, others will search for the Axis Mundi, hoping to use it for time travel just like Isabel. Tim describes Monarch 2.0 as a return to the organization’s original purpose: scientific discovery. Their goal is to find Kentaro and prevent the Axis Mundi from falling into the wrong hands. Considering Cate’s brother and Isabel were already searching for Rodan – which Shaw has now located – all these storylines should converge in season 3 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters with the return of another Titan.
