The Marvel Universe brought in one of the wickedest villains from the Marvel comics, Mephisto. As a ruler of Hell, Mephisto, portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen known for his role in Borat, is a powerful cosmic being with near limitless abilities. His entrance into the MCU raises as many questions (and potential plot inconsistencies) as it answers.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but wonder about Marvel Cinematic Universe’s enigmatic character, Mephisto. After witnessing his powers and persona unfold in the climax of Ironheart, a question that’s been buzzing among MCU fans is: just what on earth was Mephisto up to (or perhaps how he felt) when Thanos enacted his devastating snap, eliminating half the universe?
Thanos Severly Reduced Mephisto’s Clientle

In the final episode of Ironheart, titled “The Past Is the Past”, it became evident (without explicitly stating) that Mephisto’s business involves gathering souls through enticement and bargaining. This cunning demon manipulated both Parker Robbins, portrayed by Anthony Ramos, and Riri Williams, played by Dominique Thorne, into surrendering their very souls in return for powers beyond comprehension. The repercussions of these deals were swiftly shown, as the vitality or energy Mephisto extracts from his victims results in demonic, branch-like markings on their bodies. The purpose behind Mephisto’s actions remains unclear, but it is evident that he requires these bodies to achieve his objective.
How did Mephisto react when Thanos abruptly eliminated half of all souls throughout the universe with The Snap in Avengers: Infinity War?
The MCU Needs to Address Mephisto’s Reaction to The Snap (And More)

If Dormammu, the villain from Doctor Strange, is mentioned early on when Mephisto makes his appearance, then it’s reasonable to assume that Thanos should get some mention at some point too, given our limited understanding of the interconnections between cosmic Marvel Universe entities. Even if Thanos was unaware of Mephisto’s existence, it seems unlikely that Mephisto would be oblivious to Thanos and his quest for the Infinity Gauntlet, especially when half of all souls on Earth (and beyond) disappeared suddenly. Such a significant event would surely catch Mephisto’s attention, and he might not take kindly to his potential harvest being reduced by half due to Thanos’ actions.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, wherever Mephisto makes his next appearance, there should be a significant scene or exchange of dialogue that touches upon the Snap, the Blip, and the souls that were suddenly taken and reappeared. Given Mephisto’s nature, it is unlikely he would suppress such a profound event without expressing his feelings about it. Consequently, we should expect him to address this matter explicitly.
The Cosmic MCU Needs Much More Organization

In the Loki series, it’s shown that Thanos was relatively insignificant compared to the vast power wielded by beings such as the Time Variance Authority or Kang on a cosmic level. Moreover, the Infinity Stones, regardless of their origin, are found to be trivial in comparison to these multiversal powers. As for Mephisto from comic books, his abilities include altering entire realities, for instance by erasing Spider-Man and Mary Jane’s marriage from existence, or forging alliances across different realities, such as tempting Earth-4111’s Howard Stark to kill his son Tony in exchange for everlasting life.
Above all, it’s clear that Mephishto possesses the ability to survey various dimensions of the multiverse and take note of events occurring there. Furthermore, the comics present instances where Mephisto from the primary universe (616) collaborates with his alternate selves to create the “Council of Red,” a sinister counterpart to Kang’s “Council of Kangs.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a variety of powerful entities have been introduced, including the Infinity Stones, multiversal conquerors, demonic forces, Eternity (from Thor: Love and Thunder), Dormammu (Doctor Strange), the Celestials (Eternals), and Galactus (Fantastic Four: First Steps). With such a diverse array of cosmic powers at play, fans are eager for explanations regarding their relative strengths and potential connections. Given Mephisto’s role as a malevolent force in the Marvel universe, it seems appropriate for him to maintain his position as the MCU’s devil, orchestrating schemes across the cosmos.
