Meet the cast of Mighty Nein: Every Critical Role character explained

Fans can once again join the adventures in the world of Exandria – this time on the new continent of Wildemount – with the latest animated series from Critical Role, based on their popular second campaign, ‘The Mighty Nein’.

A fresh storyline introduces a completely new set of characters, groups, and quests. Unlike the heroes of Vox Machina, The Mighty Nein faces a continent on the brink of war, with a bigger emphasis on magical power and ancient artifacts.

As a huge fan, I’m thrilled to hear that all the original voice actors are returning! And the guest stars they’ve lined up are incredible – we’re talking Disney favorites like Ming-Na Wen and Auli’i Cravalho, a Star Trek icon in Jonathan Frakes, Mark Strong from Dune: Prophecy, and even Robbie Daymond, who’s become a regular at the Critical Role table. It’s a really exciting mix!

But who are the new roster of characters who make up this ragtag band of misfits and fugitives?

Who’s in the cast of The Mighty Nein?

You can now watch The Mighty Nein, the second animated series from Critical Role, on Prime Video! Keep reading to learn about the voice actors and the characters they play.

  • Laura Bailey as Jester Lavorre
  • Taliesin Jaffe as Mollymauk Tealeaf
  • Ashley Johnson as Yasha Nydoorin
  • Matthew Mercer as Essek Thelyss
  • Liam O’Brien as Caleb Widogast
  • Marisha Ray as Beauregard Lionett
  • Sam Riegel as Nott the Brave
  • Travis Willingham as Fjord Stone

Laura Bailey plays Jester Lavorre

Jester Lavorre is a beloved character known for her playful and unpredictable nature. She’s a tiefling with some water genasi heritage, and serves as a cleric of the Traveler. As a member of the group called The Mighty Nein, she grew up in the Lavish Chateau, but her love of pranks eventually lands her in trouble with an important political figure.

Jester’s mother, known as the Ruby of the Sea, is worried about her daughter’s safety and asks Fjord Willingham for help. She needs Jester to escape the city guards and journey to the Pillow Trove in Zadash. This proves difficult because Jester is a noticeable blue tiefling with vibrant blue hair, and she fights with a huge, pink, magical lollipop! To top it off, she often chats with her imaginary friend – who is actually a god called the Traveler.

Travis Willingham, a star and CEO of Critical Role, thinks the show’s bright and colorful look – including the character Jester – will really grab viewers’ attention. He points to the group’s unique designs, like a blue tiefling, green goblins, orcs, and characters dressed in bold black and white. He also notes this new team uses a lot more magic than the previous one, with Jester’s unpredictable divine powers, Fjord’s mysterious sword, Caleb’s fire magic, and Molly’s dark blood magic.

Taliesin Jaffe plays Mollymauk Tealeaf

Who is Mollymauk Tealeaf?

Mollymauk is a striking tiefling with lavender skin, red eyes, and elegantly curled horns. He works as a showy tarot reader at a traveling carnival called The Fletching and Moondrop Traveling Carnival of Curiosities, but a mishap during a new performance leads to a disaster.

Molly is a puzzling character – he’s charming and funny, but also has a dark and unsettling power to control blood. As he starts having odd, broken memories, it becomes clear there’s more to him than meets the eye.

Molly’s magical abilities, and the series’ exploration of ancient magic in general, are very interesting. The author suggests this magic is deeply connected to the story and Molly herself, implying her unique blood magic will unlock a whole new area of the narrative.

Ashley Johnson as Yasha Nydoorin

Who is Yasha Nydoorin?

Yasha is a barbarian originally from the harsh lands of Xhorhas, within the Kryn Dynasty. She’s widely known – and feared – by the title “The Orphan Maker,” a grim nickname she earned as a wandering mercenary.

While Ashley Johnson is returning to Critical Role, fans shouldn’t expect to see her character right away. She wasn’t available for many of the group’s initial adventures because she was busy filming the TV show Blindspot.

Sam Riegel, who is both the executive producer and a star of the show, says the character is introduced gradually. You first see her briefly in the first episode and a few others before she actually joins the main group. He acknowledges this might feel odd to viewers, but explains it was a deliberate creative choice.

Matthew Mercer as Essek Thelyss

Who is Essek Thelyss?

Essek is a Kryn elf and a highly skilled spy working for the Dynasty, a major power in the world of Wildemount with a significant influence on the campaign’s events. Voiced by Dungeon Master Matt Mercer, Essek is fiercely protective of the people he cares about and will do anything to keep them safe.

The Kryn Dynasty and the Dwendalian Empire are about to go to war, largely because of a stolen magical artifact, and the Mighty Nein have somehow gotten mixed up in the conflict!

Liam O’Brien as Caleb Widogast

Who is Caleb Widogast?

Caleb is a human wizard and one of The Mighty Nein, a group of adventurers. He first teamed up with Nott the Brave, a goblin, and the two of them eventually met Beauregard while traveling to a carnival. Though hesitant at first, they all ended up working together.

Caleb is a wizard who’s a bit rough around the edges and favors fire magic. Like many characters voiced by Liam O’Brien, he carries a painful history and is currently trying to escape his past.

When developing the character of Caleb, creator Liam teased that Caleb is haunted by a past mistake and deeply struggles to forgive himself.

Marisha Ray as Beauregard Lionett

Who is Beauregard Lionett?

Beauregard, nicknamed Beau, is a human monk who belongs to the Cobalt Soul. She’s also a member of the group known as The Mighty Nein, though she didn’t necessarily join willingly. She’s currently on a secret mission to investigate and expose corruption within the Cobalt Soul after a mysterious explosion raised suspicions. People describe her as a skilled fighter and a brilliant detective.

She didn’t have the best first impression with some of the Mighty Nein. While on her way to meet a contact, Caleb and Nott accidentally let her horse escape.

Marisha’s second campaign character was a stark contrast to her first. According to Matt Willingham, the heart of the story lies in the characters’ relationships and how they find connection with each other. He described Beau as simply being herself, forging her own path.

Sam Riegel as Nott the Brave

Who is Nott the Brave?

Nott is a mischievous goblin with a habit of picking pockets, which frequently gets her and her companion, Caleb, into difficult situations. She carries a crossbow, often has a drink with her, and hides behind a strange porcelain mask, all while trying to escape a troubling history.

Riegel explained that they designed the character Nott to explore both struggles with alcohol and the transgender experience.

He explained that when they begin a new project, they receive general ideas and a setting. Then, the team creates their own characters. For example, he and Liam collaborated to develop the characters of Nott and Caleb.

Travis Willingham as Fjord Stone

Who is Fjord Stone?

Okay, so Fjord is this super cool half-orc who’s both a warlock and a paladin – seriously, how awesome is that? He’s one of the Mighty Nein, and right now he’s on a mission to keep Jester safe as they head to Zadash. He’s got this incredible, glowing sword, and it’s not just for show! It gives him all sorts of weird and powerful abilities. It all started after the ship he used to work on, the Tide’s Breath, blew up – that’s when things got really interesting for him.

Willingham remembers developing the world of Fjord during a long flight from Australia, completing it in just 16 hours with ideas of pirate ships, water, and mystical energy. He added the Southern accent afterward, inspired by a previous project where he’d worked on a Scooby-Doo adaptation.

I overheard Riegel jokingly tell Travis that he made his character incredibly attractive. Willingham immediately responded with a laugh, admitting that making characters too appealing was something he always struggled with – a funny self-awareness moment!
