In May 2025, spending on video game subscriptions in the United States hit a new record high ($0.6B), marking the third consecutive month of growth, as reported by Mat Piscatella, executive director and analyst at Circana. Interestingly, this rise occurs amid discussions about the sustainability of services like Xbox Game Pass.
Following a period where there was no growth, game subscription spending significantly increased in the U.S., particularly after the introduction of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 onto Xbox Game Pass in October 2024.
Examining software sales for May, Elden Ring Nightreign by Bandai Namco and FromSoftware was the top-selling game across all platforms (Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam) and also claimed the #11 spot for the year’s best-selling games overall.
In May 2025, DOOM: The Dark Ages by Bethesda Softworks and id Software was the second highest-grossing game, with sales boosted by its launch on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Interestingly,
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, last month’s top-seller, maintained its popularity and ranked fourth for May. It is also the second most popular game of the year in the U.S., as of now.
Regarding hardware sales, there was a slight increase in PlayStation 5 sales compared to the previous year, but this growth was offset by declines in Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S hardware sales. The PlayStation 5 emerged as the best-selling console for May, both in terms of dollar sales and units sold. The total video game spending for the month reached $4.1 billion, marking a 1% increase compared to last year.
Please note that Circana monitors game sales based on revenue rather than number of copies sold. Some publishers, such as Nintendo, do not disclose digital data, while developers like Larian choose not to share any data at all.

Xbox sees software success and likely Game Pass growth
In this month, many top-selling video games are from the Xbox platform, which continues a trend seen in April. The various Xbox publishing labels have had an exceptional year, contributing significantly to these sales. Although Game Pass isn’t explicitly mentioned, it appears that the service has likely played a significant role in the increased spending on subscriptions for this month.
On the downside, Microsoft’s recent job cuts across Xbox and other departments, allegedly aimed at funding AI development, have made these decisions even more frustrating.
