One of the Decade’s Best Animated Movies Finally Gets the Sequel Update We’ve Been Waiting For

I’m a huge DreamWorks fan, and they really know how to make amazing animated movies! Especially those set in those wonderfully magical worlds. Shrek, who first stomped onto the scene back in 2001, is a perfect example – he’s not just a lead character, but helped make all his friends feel like stars too. And get this – after almost 20 years, Shrek’s coming back in a fifth movie in 2027! It’s got me thinking, maybe we’ll see some other beloved DreamWorks characters make a return as well, which I’d absolutely love!

Film enthusiast DanielRPK reports that a new Puss in Boots movie is in the works, building on the success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Released in 2022, The Last Wish earned nearly $500 million worldwide and remains the most recent film set in the “Shrek Universe.” However, DreamWorks clearly has more stories to tell, as they’re not done with Shrek and his friends. In addition to the already announced Shrek 5, this potential Puss in Boots sequel is in development, along with a spin-off movie centered on Donkey and Dragon’s children. Eddie Murphy previously confirmed that the world of Shrek is set to expand significantly in the future.

Far From The Last Wish

Many fans love Puss in Boots: The Last Wish because it’s a fun and surprisingly heartfelt story about Puss facing his own mortality and searching for purpose. He’s chased by a wolf who represents death, but along the way, he makes new friends and the movie delivers exciting action. After the credits, Puss is shown sailing back to the familiar land of Far Far Away, where the Shrek story began. However, Antonio Banderas, who voices Puss, hasn’t been officially confirmed to return for Shrek 5 in 2027, leaving fans hoping the whole team will be back for the sequel.

Details about the plot of Shrek 5 haven’t been released yet, but Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy will be back as the main voice actors. The movie recently announced that many of the original cast members are returning, and Zendaya is joining them as a grown-up version of Felicia. This suggests the film takes place a significant time after Shrek: Forever After. Given how popular Shrek and his friends are – especially thanks to internet memes – this sequel is likely to be a huge box office success, even if Puss in Boots doesn’t appear.
