Blade Runner Is Considered Rutger Hauer’s Best Movie, But There’s An Underrated ’80s Action Flick I Think Everyone Should See

For over four decades, Blade Runner has remained Rutger Hauer’s most famous film, and rightfully so. He’s legendary for his role as the defiant replicant Roy Batty, particularly his moving “tears in rain” speech. But there’s another ’80s action movie starring the late Hauer that deserves more attention, and I highly recommend it.

Forget titles like Wanted: Dead or Alive, Flesh & Blood, or Desert Law. You need to see Blind Fury! Rutger Hauer stars as a Vietnam vet who’s lost his sight but become a master swordsman with incredibly sharp senses. It’s a funny, action-packed, and thoroughly enjoyable ’80s film – a real must-watch.

What Is Blind Fury About?

Blind Fury is an American adaptation of the classic Japanese film Zatoichi Challenged. The story centers on Nick Parker, played by Rutger Hauer, a U.S. soldier who lost his sight in Vietnam. While there, he was also trained in swordsmanship by local villagers. Twenty years later, Nick returns home and seeks out a war buddy, Frank Deveraux (Terry O’Quinn), but quickly finds himself embroiled in a dangerous conflict.

Nick teams up with Frank’s son, Billy Deveraux (actor Brandon Call, known from Baywatch and Step by Step), to search for a missing friend and uncover a dangerous plot orchestrated by a major criminal organization.

Blind Fury Perfectly Blends Action And Comedy

This movie is a wild mix of genres – it’s like a samurai film, an action comedy, and a touching family story all got mashed together. It successfully combines the over-the-top energy of 1980s action movies with the humor of that decade, resulting in a film that’s both entertaining and surprisingly heartwarming.

With a 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (and a 51% audience score), Blind Fury feels accurately judged. It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s definitely not terrible. Rutger Hauer’s performance isn’t award-winning, but he clearly enjoyed playing the role, battling crooked cops, thugs, and criminals in this wildly over-the-top action film.

There’s No ‘Tears In Rain’ Moment, But There’s Some Heart

Don’t expect a deeply emotional, iconic scene like the one from Blade Runner when you watch Blind Fury. However, the film is surprisingly heartfelt. Nick Parker, despite being funny and incredibly skilled with a sword, is a damaged man hoping to find peace in a world he’s lost the ability to see.

Beyond all that, this story is about repairing friendships, strengthening family bonds, and getting justice against someone truly evil who has hurt a lot of people.

If you love over-the-top action movies from the 80s, Blind Fury is a hidden treasure you need to see. And the best part? It’s currently available to stream for free, so there’s really no reason not to check it out!
