Science fiction has remained consistently popular in books, movies, and television for generations. From its beginnings, it has sparked the imagination of countless people, creating some truly memorable stories. This is especially true for sci-fi TV shows, which have significantly impacted pop culture and continue to resonate with viewers today. By often offering insightful social critiques and challenging ideas, science fiction has earned its lasting place in modern entertainment.
Even though science fiction is a consistently popular genre, many excellent shows fly under the radar. This could be due to the sheer number of releases, or the fact that streaming changed how people watch TV, leading to lower viewership for traditional shows. As a result, a lot of truly great sci-fi from the 2010s didn’t get the attention they deserved.
5) Outcasts (BBC, 2010-2011)
The British TV series Outcasts uses a science fiction setting to tell a deeply personal story. Set in 2060 on Carpathia, a planet five years from Earth, the show follows the lives and relationships of the first human colonists as they try to build a new life among the stars. While set in the future, Outcasts primarily focuses on its characters and their connections, with the sci-fi aspects playing a secondary role.
Everyone missed out on Outcasts, and that’s a shame. This sci-fi show is truly captivating, with a compelling story about what it means to be human as a group of colonists struggle to survive on a dangerous new world. It’s a hidden gem from the 2010s that deserves more recognition.
4) Falling Skies (TNT, 2011-2015)
Premiering in 2011 and concluding in 2015 after five seasons, Falling Skies was a sci-fi series set after an alien invasion. Steven Spielberg was an executive producer. The show centers on Tom Mason, played by Noah Wyle, a former history professor who rises to a leadership position within a military-style resistance group. With a strong cast and a compelling sci-fi storyline, Falling Skies had the potential to be a truly great television show.
Despite consistently receiving good reviews during its run, Falling Skies never achieved widespread popularity. The show had a compelling story and strong acting, but it’s largely been forgotten since it ended. It’s a shame, because it was a really great sci-fi series from the 2010s that doesn’t get much attention anymore.
3) Continuum (Showcase, 2012-2015)
Despite being a fantastic sci-fi series, Continuum doesn’t get the attention it deserves. The show aired from 2012 to 2015 and centers around a group of terrorists who escape from 2077 by traveling to the present day. A police officer from the future follows them, determined to stop their plans to change the timeline. However, she has to do so while keeping her own time travel a secret.
As you might expect, Continuum is a gripping show filled with thought-provoking concepts. Its science fiction storyline was truly remarkable, gaining it a dedicated fan base. Sadly, because it was cancelled before reaching its full potential, Continuum hasn’t remained widely known. That’s unfortunate, because it’s easily one of the best sci-fi stories of the 2010s.
2) 12 Monkeys (Syfy, 2015-2018)
Inspired by the 1995 film 12 Monkeys, the TV show had all the ingredients to be a hit. Sadly, it ended up being a fantastic sci-fi series that didn’t get the attention it deserved, making it one of the most overlooked shows of the 2010s. The series retells the movie’s story, expanding on the time travel concept and adding a lot more detail.
Some people initially dismissed the 12 Monkeys TV series, feeling the original movie was already perfect. While that’s understandable, it meant they missed out on a fantastic show. The series was a tense, well-crafted time travel thriller that expanded on the ideas of the film. It’s another excellent show from the 2010s that hasn’t gotten enough recognition.
1) Almost Human (Fox, 2013-2014)
Many excellent science fiction TV shows only last for one season, and Fox’s Almost Human is a particularly overlooked gem. The show, set in 2048, follows a police detective, played by Karl Urban, who’s forced to work with an android partner, portrayed by Michael Ealy. Almost Human draws inspiration from well-known science fiction themes and also stars Minka Kelly, Mackenzie Crook, Lili Taylor, and Michael Irby.
The fact that Almost Human only lasted one season is likely why it’s largely forgotten. The show never had a chance to build a fanbase or fully realize its potential, making it one of the most disappointing cancellations of the 2010s. While it has a dedicated group of fans, it’s now a somewhat obscure sci-fi series from that decade.
