Fans of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles received disappointing news that will likely affect the upcoming The Last Ronin game. The Last Ronin was a very popular, five-issue comic book series published by IDW between 2020 and 2022. It tells the story of the last turtle alive, who is seeking revenge. Because the comics – set in a separate continuity called “The Roniverse” – were so well-received, Paramount decided to make an R-rated live-action movie. Fans were thrilled, hoping the mature rating meant the film would stay true to the darker tone of the comics.
Bad news for fans: The Hollywood Reporter announced on November 21, 2025, that Paramount has cancelled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. Instead, they’re moving forward with a new, more family-friendly live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Neal H. Moritz, known for producing The Fast and the Furious films, will produce. This will be the first new live-action TMNT movie since 2016’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, and it means the previously announced The Last Ronin adaptation is likely cancelled.
The Game Is Probably on the Chopping Block
In March 2023, ComicBook reported that a video game based on the comic books was in development, but its future was uncertain. The game appeared to be tied to a planned movie adaptation, and with the movie now cancelled, the game is also at risk. Despite this, some development work on The Last Ronin had already begun. THQ Nordic took on the project and started creating it for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, releasing a short teaser trailer in 2023.
The game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, is still being made, though development hit a snag. Originally planned as a comic book adaptation similar to God of War, with some open-world elements, progress was interrupted by layoffs at THQ Nordic’s parent company, Embracer Group. Unfortunately, this kind of setback has become common in the game industry and often leads to projects being cancelled.
Although the movie adaptation was cancelled, there hasn’t been any news about cancelling the Last Ronin game, so there’s still a chance it will come out. However, we don’t know when it might be released. With the movie no longer being made, the game could become the main way to experience the comic’s story, but that’s not certain. TMNT fans should stay hopeful, but also be aware that the game might be cancelled too.
