First published nearly 40 years ago, Watchmen is still considered one of the most important and impactful comics ever created. Written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, it’s a complex story that blends a dark mystery with a critical look at the superhero genre. Its influence on comics has been enormous, and it’s been adapted into other formats multiple times, with sequels created by different authors.
Considering how influential Watchmen is, it’s not surprising the series has several memorable moments. But one stands out as particularly significant – a comic book event that fundamentally changed the story, the character of Doctor Manhattan, and the landscape of comics itself. Today marks the official anniversary of that pivotal moment.
Today Is The Day Dr. Jonathan Osterman Fully Reassembled As Doctor Manhattan

Doctor Manhattan is a truly compelling and heartbreaking character in Watchmen. He began as Jon Osterman, a nuclear physicist conducting experiments at Gila Flats. Shortly after his thirtieth birthday, a terrible accident changed his life forever. On August 20, 1959, Jon intended to give his lover, Janey Slater, a repaired watch, but realized he’d left it in his lab coat. When he went back into the test chamber to get it, the door locked behind him. The safety system prevented anyone from stopping the process, and Jon’s colleagues could only watch in horror as he was disintegrated, his very being torn apart and declared dead.
But Jon’s story didn’t end there. Over the following months, he gradually rebuilt his body. It started with just a nervous system – a funny sight, looking like a floating brain and eyes – followed by his circulatory system and then a skeleton. Finally, on November 22nd, Jon was completely restored, appearing as a naked, blue-skinned man without any hair.
Jon’s Transformation Is Far More Than Physical

When Jon returns, he’s not just physically different—he also develops strange new abilities. Most notably, he no longer experiences time in a straight line. Instead, he’s simultaneously aware of and living through different moments from his entire life – one moment he might be in 1959, the next in 1966, or even 1985. It’s not precognition, but rather a feeling of experiencing everything all at once. Alongside these changes, he also starts to feel increasingly disconnected from his emotions.
Let me tell you, the changes Jon undergoes aren’t just personal – they ripple out and completely alter global history. He winds up essentially working for the U.S. government as Doctor Manhattan, and his power is what ultimately tips the scales in America’s favor during the Cold War. But it doesn’t stop there. We see huge economic shifts, and President Nixon actually uses Doctor Manhattan to secure an American victory in Vietnam. The consequences are wild – it even leads to the 22nd Amendment being repealed and Nixon getting re-elected… again and again. It’s a fascinating, if unsettling, look at how power can reshape everything.
Doctor Manhattan Is Simultaneously The Most Straightforward and Complex DC Character

Doctor Manhattan is a fascinating character in the DC universe, both simple and incredibly complex, which is a big reason why he remains so popular. Though he possesses near-godlike abilities, he isn’t perfect. Despite appearing emotionally detached and indifferent, he clearly desires to be understood. This is particularly noticeable in his conversation with Laurie Juspeczyk on Mars, where he points out she never asked to see things from his perspective – a logical observation, given her constant requests for him to understand human viewpoints, but also a hint that he values mutual understanding. He’s a layered character, and the origins of this complexity can be traced back to November 22nd.
