30 Years Ago Today, An Original Power Ranger Retired in An Episode Where Nobody Even Morphed

The first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers launched the series, featuring a team of five Rangers. Over the next two years, three of the original Rangers left the show, followed by one more in 1995. What made this final departure unusual was that the Ranger’s last episode didn’t even include a transformation sequence, leaving fans with an unfulfilling conclusion to that era.

Jason (Austin St. John), Zack (Walter Emanuel Jones), and Trini (Thuy Trang) finished their run on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in the episode “The Power Transfer,” making room for a new team of Rangers. Later, in 1995, Kimberly Hart (Amy Jo Johnson) also left the show, but her final scenes weren’t used in the last episode. This meant she didn’t get to appear in her Pink Ranger costume or transform one last time.

Starting in the third season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Katherine Hillard (played by Catherine Sutherland) appears more and more often. Eventually, when Kimberly decides to pursue gymnastics in Florida, she chooses Kat to take over as the Pink Ranger. This happens in Part 3 of the episode A Different Shade of Pink (November 8, 1995), though Kimberly does make further appearances as the Pink Ranger later in the series.

Kimberly’s final appearance on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is in the episode “I’m Dreaming of a White Ranger,” which first appeared on VHS in September 1995, months before it aired on TV on November 23rd, 1995. Interestingly, this episode was originally made as a Christmas special for home video, and it doesn’t offer a very conclusive ending to her story.

The Power Rangers Christmas special revolves around the team rescuing Santa Claus from Rito and Lord Zedd, but they have to do it without using their usual powers. While it’s an enjoyable holiday adventure, it’s not the most satisfying way to say goodbye to Kimberly as it feels a bit underwhelming for her final episode.

This doesn’t fit with the established story timeline either. Kimberly already gave her Power Ranger abilities to Kat and moved to Florida with Tommy’s blessing. So, it’s strange to see her back in Angel Grove, acting like she never left and trying to kiss Tommy under the mistletoe. Also, Kimberly is still the Pink Ranger in this scene, and a removed scene showed Kat celebrating Christmas with her family in Australia, suggesting she hadn’t officially taken over as the Pink Ranger yet.

To reduce confusion, the scene with Kat was removed. When the season was released on home video, this episode was moved to be the 16th one, placing it before Kimberly’s departure in the 25th episode of A Different Shade of Pink – you can see this change in the clip order above. This adjustment did improve clarity, and it’s always fascinating to see how editing and reordering can shape a story.
