Look, for years, turning video games into good movies or TV shows felt totally impossible. I mean, the best we usually got was something like the original Mortal Kombat, which was fun, but let’s be honest, it was pure, silly entertainment. But things are really changing right now! We’re seeing some genuinely good adaptations. The Sonic the Hedgehog movies were surprisingly enjoyable, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge hit, and even A Minecraft Movie managed to connect with audiences. And it’s not just the big screen – shows like Halo actually turned out better than anyone expected, and The Last of Us on HBO, Twisted Metal on Peacock, and Fallout on Prime Video are all just straight-up good – critically acclaimed and popular with viewers. It’s a great time to be a gamer and a movie buff!
FX is looking to create a successful series like those from HBO, Peacock, and Prime Video, and they’re starting with the popular video game franchise Far Cry. They’ve chosen experienced talent to adapt the game for television, hoping for a much better result than the poorly received 2008 film adaptation.
What Direction Will They Be Going with Far Cry?

FX has greenlit a new series called Far Cry, developed by Noah Hawley, the creator of Alien: Earth, and Rob McElhenney, known for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Welcome to Wrexham, and Mythic Quest. McElhenney will also star in Far Cry, playing the main character.
We’re calling it “the first season” because the show is planned as an anthology series, meaning each season will feature a completely new story. This approach aligns with the games, which have always focused on unique characters and settings with each new release.
Given the storylines of the games, it’s likely Mac will play Jack Carver – the hero from the first game and its remake, Far Cry Instincts. Carver is a former special forces operative tasked with finding a missing journalist on a dangerous island overrun with mercenaries and bizarre genetic experiments.
Mac expressed excitement about working with Noah Hawley, whose ‘Xenomorph’ series was recently renewed for another season, calling it a “dream realized.” He also praised Ubisoft for their trust in allowing his team to adapt such a beloved video game world, and thanked his colleagues at FX for their ongoing support and belief in his work.
Both It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Welcome to Wrexham are produced by FX, demonstrating that Rob McElhenney (Mac) maintains a strong working relationship with FX Networks, which is part of Disney Entertainment. This isn’t the first time he’s collaborated with Ubisoft, either; Ubisoft Film & Television also created the Apple TV series Mythic Quest.
Noah Hawley is known for creating popular shows like Alien: Earth, Legion, and Fargo for the network. He explained his excitement about his latest project, inspired by the Far Cry video game franchise. He appreciates that Far Cry, like Fargo, is an anthology series, with each installment exploring a similar idea in a new way. He described his goal as creating a large-scale action show that can evolve each season while consistently examining the complexities of human nature, calling it a “dream come true.” He’s looking forward to working with Rob to bring their unique and bold vision to life.
Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, shared his enthusiasm for the show, highlighting FX’s successful history with creators Rob Mac and Noah Hawley – a collaboration spanning six series and 32 seasons. He expressed confidence that their partnership on Far Cry will deliver a unique, compelling, and highly entertaining story, and thanked Ubisoft for allowing FX to adapt this popular franchise.
The show will be available to stream on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ everywhere else. While there’s no news yet on when Far Cry will be released, it’s encouraging to see the cast and crew working well together with a clear, shared goal.
