Harry Potter Reboot Report Confirms HBO Is Avoiding What Killed the First Wizarding World (for Now)

HBO is moving forward with its big plans for a Harry Potter TV series, and it’s learning from what happened with the movies. While the films were hugely successful, the new series aims to be even more faithful to the original books. The plan is to dedicate an entire season to each book, with around eight episodes per season, allowing for a much more detailed and expansive adaptation – potentially a ten-year project – that goes beyond what was shown in the movies and explores elements not directly included in the books.

Currently, there are no plans for spinoff shows related to the new Harry Potter series. Considering HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery already have many established franchises, some might expect additional shows exploring the Wizarding World. However, HBO’s CEO, Casey Bloys, recently confirmed at an event in Brazil (as reported by Omelete) that the focus is solely on the Harry Potter remake itself, with no offshoot projects in development.

Harry Potter Spinoffs Are Inevitable (Eventually)

It’s smart that they’re not rushing to expand the story beyond the main Harry Potter books right away. HBO’s priority should be nailing the reboot – that’s the most important thing, and everything else can come later. The remake has a lot riding on it, and expectations will be incredibly high, so they need to focus on getting it right before planning any further expansions. Even within this magical universe, it’s best to take things one step at a time.

This approach also helps avoid the pitfalls Warner Bros. faced with the Fantastic Beasts films. The first movie was enjoyable, but the sequels suffered from numerous problems – both in front of and behind the camera – leading to negative reviews and disappointing box office results. They struggled to find the right mix of telling a new story and expanding on the existing Harry Potter universe. Originally planned as a five-film series, only three were made, and it’s unlikely the remaining two ever will be – which is a major reason we’re now getting a new adaptation of the original books. This highlights how easily spin-offs can fail, and it’s reassuring that HBO is taking a more cautious and deliberate approach.

It’s hard to imagine the Harry Potter universe won’t expand with new shows and movies eventually. The Wizarding World offers so much potential, and successful franchises are highly valued. Just like HBO is doing with DC and Game of Thrones, they could easily create more content within this world. A TV series about the Marauders, for example, leading up to the first Order of the Phoenix and the early conflict with Voldemort, would likely be popular. However, this should only happen after the upcoming Harry Potter remake proves successful, and since that’s still a couple of years away, it won’t happen immediately.

The Harry Potter remake will debut on HBO and HBO Max sometime in 2027.
