The Sandman Season 2: Where Did Destruction Go and Why Did He Quit?

In Season 2 of “The Sandman,” it was unveiled where Destruction had vanished and the enigma surrounding his absence. As one of the Endless, Destruction (Barry Sloane) embarked on a significant journey in the Netflix fantastical series when he decided to forsake his responsibilities (and ultimately, his domain) centuries past as a means to express that he no longer wished to embody devastation because of his affection for mankind.

His contentious action created ripples among his endless kin and the universe at large, pushing him into seclusion. The second season of the Netflix series unfolded Destruction’s narrative, yet the mystery of his absence sparked an adventure for Dream (Tom Sturridge) and Delirium (Esmé Creed-Miles) to locate him. What Happened to Destruction In Sandman Season 2 (Here’s Why He Decided to Quit)

Tired of witnessing the destructive potential of humankind, particularly the dangerous weapons they possess, Destruction grew weary of his role as a symbol of annihilation. He found it too heavy a burden to continually watch humanity’s ability to destroy both the world and themselves.

In my own words, I’d say: I forsook everything familiar – my kin and my kingdom – to embark on a new journey, seeking a life of tranquility far removed from the burdens and tumultuousness that accompanied my responsibilities.

In the fourth episode of Season 2 of “The Sandman,” it was revealed that after Dream had dealt with Lucifer’s strategy concerning the key to Hell, Delirium enlisted Dream’s help to locate their brother, Destruction, as his dominion has been chaotic for some time, and no one is currently in charge.

Despite being furious with Destruction for abandoning both his realm and his kin, Morpheus (also known as Dream) decided to accompany his sister Delirium on her quest, secretly using this opportunity to search for Nada (his beloved) in the mortal world.

On their expedition to seek information about Destruction’s current residence from his acquaintances, the narrative unveiled an intriguing detail: Destruction resides in a secluded area (which remained undisclosed at that juncture), spending his days immersed in creative pursuits such as painting, composing poetry, and conversing with Barnabas, his loyal canine confidant.

Destruction deliberately remained hidden, as he and Barnabas had established a warning system to alert him if his kin or any other entities attempted to locate him (learn more about the intriguing family dynamics of The Sandman, which includes the Endless).

Where Did Destruction Go In Sandman Season 2?

In a series of unexpected events, Dream and Delirium’s journey to locate Destruction eventually brought them to Orpheus (Ruairi O’Connor), Dream’s long-lost son. Overwhelmed by grief, Orpheus implored his father to grant him the release from life needed for him to rejoin his late wife, Eurydice, in the underworld.

In Episode 5 of The Sandman’s second season, we learned that Orpheus’ plea for death resulted in him being separated from his body, leaving only his head, following the Sisters of Frenzy dismantling him. Desperate and tormented, Orpheus implored Morpheus to end his life immediately. However, Dream was unable to comply at that time as the Endless had sworn an oath against shedding their own family’s blood.

The situation took a dramatic turn when Orpheus pleaded with his father, Dream, for a favor in return for information on Destruction’s whereabouts. Dream reluctantly granted his son’s request, but what Orpheus asked for was, unfortunately, his own demise. With a heavy heart, Dream explained his shortcomings as a parent and, without hesitation, took his son’s life with a single stroke.

In The Sandman’s Season 2, Volume 2, Orpheus managed to uncover where Destruction was hiding. It turned out that Destruction resided on an isolated island, just neighboring Orpheus’ temple, a place Dream himself had stated he wouldn’t dare to visit due to his brother’s choice of residence: “It seems our brother picked the one location he knew I wouldn’t dare to approach.

In this location, Destruction shared with Dream and Delirium his reluctance to resume his responsibilities, chiefly due to the emotional toll of observing endless deaths and annihilation across various worlds and realms. Prior to Dream and Delirium departing (having accepted his decision), their sibling revealed that his choice stemmed from a deep affection for humanity.

Ultimately, the last scene of Destruction proved that he had a kind heart and was determined to surpass his predestined limitations.
