Konami’s remake, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, has been a success, receiving positive reviews and selling over a million copies in its first week. With Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 also performing well, fans are now wondering what Konami’s plans are for future, brand-new Metal Gear Solid games.
Noriaki Okamura, the producer of the series, is still considering the future. He recently told RealSound that while he’s pleased with bringing ‘Metal Gear’ to new players, he’s interested in continuing the project. (Translated from Japanese using DeepL)
He’s still considering whether to remake more games or create something entirely new. He believes the Metal Gear series reflects the evolution of video games, moving from simple pixel art to detailed cinematic experiences, and that each game requires a unique approach to remaking. Because of this, Okamura doesn’t want to use the same techniques from Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater for every title. Instead, the team will determine the best way to handle each game individually.
The team is actively considering what to do next, and he personally believes a remake of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is likely to happen.
He explained that the older hardware required a very specific method to get 3D graphics working, and Metal Gear Solid 4 ended up with some unusual code as a result. He chuckled, adding that updating it for modern systems would be a significant undertaking.
Originally launched in 2008 for the PlayStation 3, Metal Gear Solid 4 is the only game in the series that hasn’t been updated or re-released in high definition. Given its significance to the story—it wraps up the storylines of several key characters—its omission is quite noticeable.
As a huge fan, I’m really hoping Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 includes the original Metal Gear! It would be amazing for a new generation to finally play it, even though Konami hasn’t fully announced what’s in the collection yet. And honestly, if they went ahead and remade it like Okamura wants? Even better! I wouldn’t mind if it wasn’t strictly chronological – just getting a modern version of that classic would be incredible.
