Anime is usually filled with stories about heroic characters – brave, honorable, and full of good intentions. However, sometimes a villain emerges who is even more captivating. These aren’t simple bad guys; they’re complex characters with depth, often making the heroes seem less interesting. Through compelling backstories, unwavering self-assurance, or thought-provoking beliefs, these villains dominate every scene, captivating both the heroes and the viewers.
It’s easy to see why people often enjoy villains just as much, or even more than, the heroes. There’s something captivating about a character who steals the show and makes the story even better.
7. Hisoka Morow – Hunter x Hunter

Hisoka from Hunter x Hunter isn’t just dangerous—he’s in a league of his own. He’s a captivating mix of grace and brutality, a true enigma. While Gon is still finding his way, Hisoka is fully formed, completely aware of his desires: the excitement of battling strong opponents. This raw honesty and self-assurance, even in his darkness, makes him a fascinating character. He doesn’t bother with excuses or attempts to change; Hisoka is simply, boldly himself, which is what makes him more compelling than most heroes.
6. Shogo Makishima – Psycho-Pass

Shogo Makishima is a subtle rebel in the world of Psycho-Pass. This dystopian society uses the Sybil System to judge people based on their mental state, but Makishima exists outside of its control. Because he’s naturally immune to the system’s judgment, he becomes a philosophical terrorist, deliberately causing chaos to reveal the problems with a system that oversimplifies humanity. Makishima isn’t a villain who relies on strength; he’s intelligent and incredibly convincing, using powerful ideas to challenge the status quo.
5. Sosuke Aizen – Bleach

Aizen starts out appearing as a gentle and kind captain of the Gotei 13, but he’s eventually revealed to be the one pulling the strings behind many major events in Bleach. His betrayal of the Soul Society is a truly shocking and memorable moment in the series.
Aizen is effortlessly powerful and completely in control, able to change reality without even trying. He’s charismatic, but with an underlying threat, and always seems to be thinking several moves ahead. His calm demeanor and sharp mind make him a more compelling figure than any of his hot-headed opponents.
4. Meruem – Hunter x Hunter

Meruem starts as a terrifying monster, born to be king of the Chimera Ants. He’s incredibly powerful and acts like a ruler, immediately inspiring fear and demanding obedience from those around him – he initially sees humans as insignificant. However, Meruem undergoes a remarkable change, becoming one of anime’s most compelling characters. Meeting Komugi, a blind Gungi player who actually challenges him, begins to make him more human. As he confronts his own mortality and considers the meaning of life, Meruem develops surprising emotional depth. Unlike typical heroes focused on justice or revenge, Meruem represents power combined with thoughtful self-reflection.
3. Dio Brando – JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

Each new JoJo protagonist emerges as a direct response to the bold and extravagant evil of Dio. His famous battle cry, “ZA WARUDO!” and his power to stop time have become instantly recognizable in anime. Even after his defeat, Dio’s influence continues to affect the entire JoJo story. His family line, his beliefs, and even his captivating personality live on. That’s what makes him a true icon. Dio understands his own nature and doesn’t seek pity, which surprisingly makes him a compelling character.
2. Madara Uchiha – Naruto Shippuden

Madara is an exceptionally compelling character, carrying a legendary aura with remarkable ease. As a founding member of the Hidden Leaf Village and a former friend and rival of Hashirama Senju, he once shared a vision of peace. Whenever he appears, his actions feel predestined, as if reality itself conforms to his desires. Madara isn’t seeking forgiveness or understanding; he’s beyond those concerns. His serene confidence and commanding presence make him undeniably more impressive than any hero who has opposed him.
1. Lelouch vi Britannia (as Zero) – Code Geass

Lelouch is a compelling antihero – a character who’s both a hero and a villain, and that’s what makes him so fascinating. As a prince of the Britannian Empire, he secretly becomes Zero, the masked leader of a rebel group fighting against the oppressive empire. Driven by his resentment towards his father, the Emperor, and his devotion to his sister, Nunnally, Lelouch transforms rebellion into a carefully crafted performance and war into a strategic game. His brilliant mind for manipulation and willingness to compromise his own values for the sake of a better world make him a more captivating figure than traditional, purely ‘good’ heroes who don’t grasp the sacrifices required to win.
