If Superman underperforms at the cinema, the lineup for the DC Universe might shrink significantly since several films and series could be terminated. In recent times, Warner Bros. has struggled to achieve box office success with their DC-themed content, and given its pivotal role in kickstarting the new DC Universe, Superman carries a heavy burden of expectation. Already, James Gunn’s DC Studios has unveiled an extensive roster of upcoming movies and shows, but a disappointing debut could trigger substantial adjustments within the studio’s ranks.
Because different sources suggest that the budget for the movie “Superman” varies from $200 million up to $360 million, it’s challenging to determine an exact box office figure necessary for it to be deemed successful. However, filmmaker James Gunn recently disputed claims that it would need to earn over $700 million to be a success, calling such assertions “completely and utterly false” during his interview with GQ magazine.
Why DC Studios Could Cancel 3 Movies If Superman Flops
Brave and the Bold
DC Studios intends to debut the second part of their “World’s Finest” duo in the series called “Brave and the Bold” by featuring a seasoned Batman who boasts a strong Bat-Family consisting of characters such as Robin, Nightwing, and Batgirl.
Warner Bros. currently has an ongoing Dark Knight franchise, titled “The Batman,” starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Matt Reeves. This “Crime Saga” is projected to carry on alongside the separate DC Universe but may become the main focus if Superman’s performance falls short and expansion plans are delayed.
The Batman franchise has demonstrated its dominance at the box office, raking in $772.2 million from the initial film alone. Notably, the 2022 blockbuster and the critically acclaimed HBO’s The Penguin spin-off series have also garnered positive reviews.
Essentially, if Superman fails and Warner Bros. perceives The Brave and the Bold as too risky, they might redirect their entire Batman focus towards the universe of director Matt Reeves.
The Authority
As a devoted film enthusiast, I find myself growing increasingly curious about the status of “The Authority” within the DC Universe (DCU). It’s been quite some time since its initial unveiling, and it seems to be one of the rare projects from this universe that has yet to see significant updates.
Initially, there was great anticipation surrounding this project as it was seen as DC’s response to the resounding success of “The Boys.” However, it appears that no creative minds have been officially brought on board, and there have even been whispers suggesting a possible animated adaptation. I can’t help but wonder what lies ahead for this intriguing concept.
Notably, “The Authority” stands out among the other projects since it’s the only one directly stemming from “Superman.” It will reintroduce María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer, who is currently employed by Lex Luthor but is about to carve her own destiny.
If Angela Spica, known as The Engineer, fails to captivate viewers and Superman doesn’t meet expectations in performance, it becomes apparent that The Authority might be pushed aside temporarily to focus on more secure, less risky projects.
Deathstroke & Bane
In September 2024, The Hollywood Reporter disclosed that screenwriter Matthew Horton was developing a collaborative film featuring Captain America’s adversaries, Deathstroke and Bane. At this point, there is no identified director for the project.
It’s clear that this upcoming movie from DC University is quite daring, given that these two villains typically don’t collaborate. However, since they are both well-known adversaries in the DC universe, there’s no doubt that it could lead to some exciting, action-packed scenes.
A potential downside if Superman fails could be that riskier ventures might get cancelled, and the Deathstroke/Bane blockbuster may be one of those at risk.
3 DCU TV Shows Could Be Canceled If Superman Flops Too
Waller
In light of the upcoming season 2 of Peacemaker airing in August, I find myself preparing for the release of Waller, a series initially conceived to bridge the gap between seasons. However, this new positioning post-season 2 has sparked curiosity among fans, with some questioning if it’s still essential given the uncertainty surrounding an Amanda Waller series and its focus.
The upcoming series is anticipated to share some narrative links with both _Superman_ and _Peacemaker_, given that Frank Grillo will return as the character, Rick Flag Sr.
Booster Gold
There’s been much discussion about whether DC fans prefer a comedic style like the MCU or a darker theme similar to the Snyderverse for Superman. If viewers find Superman too light-hearted, then a comedy superhero series like Booster Gold could be one of the first to be canceled.
Little information has been disclosed about the project, which features Booster Gold, a failure from the future who returns to the past and utilizes advanced technology to transform into a superhero. However, whispers suggest that actor Kumail Nanjiani from the Eternals may take on the role.
Paradise Lost
When “Paradise Lost” was unveiled, it appeared that there was no upcoming Wonder Woman movie in production at DC Studios. However, this situation shifted dramatically when James Gunn confirmed that a script is currently being penned for the Justice League icon’s storyline, which is distinct from “Paradise Lost.
Notably, the Themiscyra series stands out as one of only a handful of DC Universe projects without designated creators attached, potentially allowing for its inconspicuous shelving if necessary, with priority given to the development of Wonder Woman instead.
