One of 2025’s Best New Shows Renewed for Season 2 Ahead of Season 1 Finale

Apple TV Plus has greenlit Season 2 for one of this year’s standout new series, as they announced on Thursday that they have renewed the show “Murderbot”. This announcement precedes the Season 1 finale, which will air on Friday. The series, comprising 10 episodes and starring Alexander Skarsgård in the title role, concludes its first season this week. “Murderbot” is adapted from Martha Wells’ popular science fiction novel series, “The Murderbot Diaries”, which has garnered numerous awards including a Hugo Award, a Nebula Award, and a Locus Award. Since its debut on Apple TV Plus in May, the show has received a 96% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has consistently ranked among Apple TV Plus’ top-performing shows during its initial run.

Speaking about the renewal for Season 2, Chris and Paul Weitz, creators and showrunners of the TV adaptation of Murderbot, are thrilled to revisit the universe of Murderbot again. In a statement to the media, they shared their gratitude for the positive reception of Murderbot and their joy at having the opportunity to return to Martha Wells’ world to collaborate with Alexander, Apple, CBS Studios, and the rest of the team once more.

Murderbot Will Return for Season 2

In this show, titled “Murderbot,” Gustaf Skarsgård takes on the role of a security robot that names itself “Murderbot” after gaining self-awareness. He’s also one of the executive producers, joined by Noma Dumezweni, David Dastmalchian, Sabrina Wu, Akshay Khanna, Tattiawna Jones, and Tamara Podemski. The series follows this robot as it hides its newfound freedom while protecting its human clients on a perilous mission. “Murderbot” has a penchant for watching soap operas over engaging in the violence it was designed for, adding a touch of humor to the action-packed narrative.

Matt Cherniss, Apple TV+’s programming chief, commended the show Murderbot upon its renewal. In a statement, he lauded the creative team behind the series for creating an exceptional, innovative production. “Chris, Paul, Alexander, and the entire Murderbot crew have crafted an exceptionally original, engaging, clever, and lively adaptation that has captured the interest of viewers worldwide. We can’t wait to reveal what’s in store next for Murderbot.

The introduction of “Murderbot” marks another successful debut for Apple TV+’s original series. This streaming platform has demonstrated its competitive edge against Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max with its high-quality original programming. Besides “Murderbot”, Apple TV+ also hosts shows like “Silo”, “Severance”, and “Foundation”.

On this coming Friday, July 11th, the final episode of the inaugural season for the series “Murderbot” will air. At present, you can only stream “Murderbot” on Apple TV+.
