In 2019, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, previously known for their work with the horror group “Radio Silence,” released the horror-comedy Ready or Not. The film follows Grace (Samara Weaving), who expects to meet her future in-laws, but instead finds herself trapped in a deadly game played by her fiancé’s wealthy and sinister family as part of a satanic ritual.
Grace became a survivor in the first “Ready or Not” film by outsmarting the dangerous le Domas family and triggering the explosive demise of everyone involved, thanks to a deal with the sinister Mr. le Bail. But the trailer for the new sequel, Ready or Not: Here I Come, shows that her victory was just the beginning. The le Domas family was only part of a much larger, powerful group, and they’ve now targeted Grace as their ultimate prey.
The upcoming film, Ready or Not, boasts a large and impressive cast. Samara Weaving will star alongside Kathryn Newton (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) as her sister, Faith. Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) plays Ursula Danforth, a skilled hunter, and Shawn Hatosy (Alpha Dog, The Faculty) appears as Titus Danforth. Notably, director David Cronenberg (The Fly, A History of Violence) plays the patriarch, Mr. Danforth. The cast also includes Néstor Carbonell (Lost, The Dark Knight), Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings), Olivia Cheng (Warrior, Deadly Class), Varun Saranga (Wynonna Earp), and Kevin Durand (Lost, The Strain).
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are back to direct the sequel, and Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy have returned to write the script. The original Ready or Not didn’t become a blockbuster, but it was still profitable, earning $57.6 million on a $6 million budget. Released in late August 2019, the film gained a strong following on streaming, especially after the directors found mainstream success with the recent Scream movies (Scream V and Scream VI). Samara Weaving, who had a breakout role in the first Ready or Not, has also become a bigger star, recently leading the Hulu comedy Eenie Meanie. Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will also be excited to see Sarah Michelle Gellar involved, as a reboot of that series is currently in development.
Most people didn’t expect Ready or Not to become a horror-comedy series. It’s still too early to say if that will happen, but it seems likely this will be a thrilling and unpredictable story overall, potentially unfolding in two parts.
