As a longtime comic book and movie fan, I’ve always felt Superman deserves a little more credit when we talk about superhero foundations. He really was the first to establish so many of the tropes we now take for granted – the secret identity, the bright costume, even the idea of a recurring arch-enemy. While his initial bad guy, the Ultra-Humanite, didn’t quite stick, Lex Luthor exploded onto the scene and immediately became a fan favorite. Over the years, Superman’s collected a truly impressive roster of villains – Brainiac, General Zod, Doomsday… the list goes on. It’s true that Batman’s villains might be more widely known, but Superman’s are just as compelling, and honestly, a lot of them don’t get the attention they deserve.
It’s understandable that iconic Superman villains like Lex Luthor and Brainiac appear more often in comics. However, that means many other deserving villains get overlooked. Today, we’ll be highlighting ten of Superman’s most underrated foes, ranking them based on how much of a threat they pose in a head-to-head battle. You might be surprised at just how cool – and dangerous – some of these villains are once you know their backstories. Let’s dive in!
10) The Invisible Mafia

Debuted in Action Comics #1001.
Brian Michael Bendis is a well-known comic book writer, but his work on Superman is often criticized. A particularly unpopular change he made was rapidly aging up Jon Kent. Additionally, the villains he used – like Rogol Zaar and Jor-El – weren’t engaging and weighed down the story. Despite this, one of his creations showed promise: The Invisible Mafia. This crime syndicate, based in Metropolis, specializes in operating secretly, even managing to avoid detection by Superman himself.
The concept of a secret mafia dealing with metahuman crimes – one that even manages to stay hidden from Superman – is compelling. The comic explored how they achieved this, detailing methods like avoiding trigger words that might alert Superman, such as ‘Kryptonite.’ However, despite being interesting, the group’s only known powered member, Red Cloud, who could turn into a poisonous mist, isn’t as immediately dangerous to Superman as others on this list.
9) Titano

Debuted in Superman (1939) #127.
Titano, a massive ape and one of Superman’s greatest foes, wasn’t always so powerful. He began as an ordinary chimpanzee named Toto, but a dose of Kryptonite drastically changed him. He grew to an enormous size – comparable to King Kong – and gained incredible strength to match. The Kryptonite also gave him a dangerous ability: laser beams that shoot from his eyes, capable of weakening even Superman with a single look. While Titano’s intelligence remains at a normal chimpanzee level, his sheer size and powerful lasers make him a constant threat. You can see more of Titano in the upcoming Supergirl (2025)!
8) Subjekt-17

Debuted in Superman #655.
Subjekt-17’s story shares striking similarities with Superman’s. Like Superman, he arrived on Earth as a baby after his parents’ spacecraft crashed. His father died in the crash, and his mother died shortly after he was born. However, instead of being raised by loving farmers, Subjekt-17 was taken in by the Soviet Union, where he was imprisoned and subjected to decades of cruel experiments. He eventually escaped and embarked on a violent rampage, seeking revenge against humanity. He possessed many of the same powers as Superman – flight, super strength, x-ray vision, and invulnerability – but also had additional abilities like telepathy, telekinesis, and sonic screams. He represents a chilling alternate version of Superman, and is an incredibly powerful being in his own right.
7) Chemo

Debuted in Showcase #39.
Chemo is a massive, barely-living container made of plastic and filled with incredibly dangerous chemicals. This monstrous being radiates toxicity and can spread contamination wherever he goes. His size ranges from twenty-five to a hundred feet tall. While already a threat due to his destructive power, Chemo once served as a weapon of mass destruction, leveling much of Blüdhaven, and he can quickly recover from almost any injury. He poses a severe danger to both people and the environment, and only exceptionally powerful heroes like Superman or the Metal Men have any hope of defeating him and surviving the encounter.
6) Hfuhruhurr the Word Bringer

Debuted in Adventures of Superman Annual #1.
Hfuhruhurr is a truly terrifying enemy of Superman, and his name is notoriously difficult to say. This cosmic being traveled the universe for millennia, gathering the brains of intelligent creatures to form a collective consciousness he called the Union. Driven by a fanatical devotion to this Union, he once attempted to convert an entire town in South Dakota to his cause. Though he hasn’t appeared often, Hfuhruhurr’s immense telekinetic power and unwavering, disturbing goal of creating the Union present a unique and significant challenge for Superman, pushing him to his limits like few other villains can.
5) Emperor Super-Man

Debuted in Superman (2011) #51.
Known as Super-Man Zero, this character was China’s initial effort to create a Superman-like hero. Originally an ordinary man, he gained Superman’s powers after being infused with the energy of the New 52 Superman following the hero’s death. This gave Emperor Super-Man incredible strength and invulnerability. He became even more powerful—and dangerous—when infected with the Doomsday Virus, which added Doomsday’s abilities to his existing powers. This combination of Superman and Doomsday makes Emperor Super-Man an extremely formidable opponent.
4) Brainiac 13

Debuted in Superman: Y2K.
This incredibly dangerous robot comes from the 64th century and is a descendant of the villain Brainiac. He’s the most powerful version of Brainiac Superman has ever fought, and his abilities prove it. While the original Brainiac is already a formidable enemy – possessing immense intelligence, knowledge, strength, and advanced technology – Brainiac 13 takes everything to an extreme level. His technology and strategies are so advanced they seem like magic. This version of Brainiac has almost destroyed everything on multiple occasions, even forcing Lex Luthor and Superman to work together to defeat him.
3) Kryl-Ux

Debuted in Action Comics #1030.
Kryl-Ux is a recently introduced villain who quickly established himself as one of Superman’s greatest threats. Like Superman, he’s a Phaelosian – a relative of Kryptonians – and developed incredible strength and anger after being forced to fight as a gladiator on Warworld. He’s become even more powerful by merging with Olgrun, an ancient and immensely powerful god. This allowed Kryl-Ux to conquer Earth and rule the galaxy for almost a thousand years. He even used his control over time and space to send Superman far into the future, and he’s still growing stronger as he absorbs more divine power.
2) Dominus

Debuted in Action Comics #747.
Dominus is a powerful magical being, similar to Doctor Fate’s Nabu, known as a Lord of Order. These beings have almost limitless power and can drastically alter reality. Dominus is incredibly strong, able to fundamentally change what’s real. He’s demonstrated this by turning Superman’s nightmares into reality and even swapping places with Superman to take control of the world. However, Dominus needs someone else to imagine things for him, as he doesn’t have a mind or body of his own to create with.
Despite his weaknesses, Dominus remains one of Superman’s most formidable and effective enemies. He famously tricked the entire world into believing Superman had become a villain, as seen in the story Superman: King of the World.
1) Imperiex-Prime

Debuted in Superman (1987) #153.
Imperiex-Prime is essentially Superman’s equivalent of a cosmic-level threat like Galactus. He’s a living force of destruction, contained within a massive suit of armor, and his goal is to completely wipe out and restart the universe. Having existed since the beginning of time, he’s known as the Destroyer of Galaxies and believes the original creation of the universe was flawed, so he’s constantly destroying planets in an attempt to trigger a new Big Bang. Imperiex is incredibly powerful – defeating him required a massive team-up including Superman, Earth’s heroes, Lex Luthor, Maxima, the Daxamites, Brainiac-13, and even Darkseid. Even with all of them fighting together, the battle was extremely difficult. Imperiex remains one of Superman’s most dangerous enemies, and his return would spell trouble for everyone.
Here are ten of Superman’s most overlooked villains, listed from strongest to weakest. Now, which Superman villain do you think deserves to be on this list, and how would you rank them compared to these powerful foes?
