It’s looking like fewer Xbox consoles will be gifted this holiday season. The competition between Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo is always fierce, but this generation has been especially challenging for Xbox. While PlayStation has faced some issues with canceled games and rocky releases like Concord, Xbox has struggled to gain traction. Price increases for Xbox consoles and the Xbox Game Pass subscription, combined with layoffs and the cancellation of promising games like Perfect Dark, have left many players disappointed.
Okay, so a lot of us gamers are starting to worry about Xbox. There was a ton of talk a few months back that they might just stop making consoles altogether – I even heard stories about stores pulling them off the shelves! Target said they’re still selling Xbox stuff, thankfully, but it’s clear Microsoft is changing things up with how they’re getting consoles to players, and honestly, it doesn’t seem to be going smoothly.
Xbox Struggles During Black Friday
A recent report from gaming sales data firm Circana reveals that Xbox didn’t even come in third place in console sales during Black Friday week. PlayStation 5 led with 47% of hardware sales, followed by Nintendo Switch at 24%. Surprisingly, a device called NEX Playground took third place with 14% of sales. The NEX Playground is a motion-controlled gaming system similar to Kinect, designed for families looking for active entertainment.

During the peak shopping week of the year, Xbox accounted for less than 14% of all hardware sales. This is largely because their Black Friday discounts weren’t very competitive. Limited availability of Xbox consoles may also indicate low demand, especially considering the $650 price tag. Consequently, Xbox is unlikely to have strong holiday sales. It’s possible Xbox is preparing to release its next-generation console earlier than planned, hoping to leverage its increased power and encourage customers to move away from the current model.
