Although Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is now available on PS5, the developers at Asobo Studio actually proposed a PlayStation version much earlier in the game’s creation. According to Jorg Neumann, head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, Xbox executives initially rejected the idea.
Neumann explained that when Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 launched on PC in August 2020, it already needed a lot of storage space. Over time, with new content added, the game grew to a massive 300 GB by 2023. This prompted the team to rethink their approach, leading to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024’s design. The new version has a small 8 GB initial download and streams the rest of the game data from the cloud as it’s needed.
I initially suggested we expand to PlayStation about two and a half years ago, but it wasn’t the right time and the request was denied. More recently, someone at Sony who was a fan of flight simulation saw the potential and contacted our President. He then told me that Sony was now interested in pursuing the PlayStation version, recalling our earlier conversation from about a year prior.
He believes the initial conversations between Sony and Xbox led to a broader shift within Xbox Game Studios to release games on PlayStation. Regarding Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Neumann explained that bringing the game to PlayStation required significant optimization, particularly for compatibility with the DualSense controller and PlayStation VR2. Work on the VR2 version is still ongoing.
He believes that initial move sparked a wave of Xbox games being released on PlayStation. After that, the team focused on bringing those titles over, which took time because they were still finishing Flight Simulator 2024, which launched around a year ago. Once that was done, they spent a significant amount of effort optimizing the game for PlayStation 5 and ensuring the controller functioned seamlessly. They’re also continuing to refine the VR version, which is still in development but will be released soon.
Neumann revealed that Asobo Studio partnered with Climax Studios to create the PlayStation 5 version of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. He explained that their previous collaborations on games like Crackdown, combined with Climax Studios’ existing PS5 development expertise, made them a strong choice for the project.
So, I brought in Climax Studios – I’ve worked with them before, way back on games like Crackdown. I’ve been with Microsoft for years, and I knew they were a solid team. I spoke with the lead at Climax, and it turns out they’ve done a ton of work on the PS5, which was perfect for what we needed, so they really took the lead on this.
