Game of Thrones’ Next Spinoff Will Break a 10-Year Streak & Fix a Major Streaming Problem

HBO is building out the world of Game of Thrones and addressing a previous issue with its storytelling. Beyond House of the Dragon, which will return for a third season in 2026 and a fourth in 2028, the network has plans for more shows set in Westeros. These include series focusing on events like Aegon’s Conquest, and potentially even continuations of the original story. HBO aims to have a Game of Thrones show airing annually well into the 2030s.

Let’s start with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This new series, while still set in the world of House Targaryen, will be quite different from what you’ve seen before. Unlike Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, it’s a more intimate story, following the adventures of a wandering knight, Dunk, and his young apprentice, Egg, as they travel across Westeros. Forget dragons, armies, and battles for the throne – this show focuses on personal journeys. But that doesn’t mean it’s less compelling. It’s packed with great characters and stories, and being a smaller show actually has some benefits, like a quicker release schedule.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Will Air In Consecutive Years (& That’s Great)

Even before the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is released, HBO has renewed the show for a second season! They’ve announced Season 2 will come out in 2027, and filming is planned to begin next year. This is a change in strategy for the Game of Thrones universe – it will be the first time a show from the franchise has had back-to-back seasons since 2017, when Season 7 of Game of Thrones originally aired.

As the popularity of these shows grew, releases became less frequent. For example, the final season of Game of Thrones didn’t air until 2019, and House of the Dragon has consistently had two-year breaks between seasons. This trend of longer waits is becoming common with streaming shows. While factors like the Covid-19 pandemic and Hollywood strikes have played a role, it’s led to frustration for fans of many series, including Stranger Things and Wednesday, which both had three-year gaps between seasons.

Okay, so A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms doesn’t have the massive scale or budget of shows like House of the Dragon or Stranger Things, but honestly, I’m really glad we’re getting another season so quickly. Remember how important that consistent release schedule was for Game of Thrones when it was first building its audience? This feels similar. Plus, with young Egg – Dexter Sol Ansell – still just a kid, they need to keep filming relatively close together so he doesn’t age out of the role, which is something Stranger Things has definitely struggled with.

Beyond just arriving at a good time, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms seems like exactly what the Game of Thrones universe needs right now. The trailers suggest a more cheerful and lighthearted story, and it will explore a different part of Westeros than we’ve seen before. Based on some of George R.R. Martin’s strongest writing, it promises to be a refreshing addition to the series. This is crucial as the franchise grows with new shows and continues for years to come, preventing it from becoming repetitive.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 will debut on HBO and HBO Max on January 18th, 2026.
