This year signifies both five years since the conclusion of “Supernatural” and its 20th anniversary as a long-running CW series. To this day, it continues to be a beloved show, particularly among Netflix subscribers. The cast remains close, and their upcoming appearance in “The Boys” underscores this. However, there have been rumors about a potential return for “Supernatural”, specifically a revival format. Fans have expressed interest in an R-rated streaming reboot, and recently, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki have voiced their opinions on the matter.
The final episode of “Supernatural” sparked debate among fans, as they disagreed not only about its conclusion but also over who was featured or excluded. However, this doesn’t seem to dampen fans’ hope that the series might resurface in some way, and they aren’t alone in their wish. Over a year ago, Padalecki voiced his thoughts on how the show could return, and his desire remains unaltered as he discussed “SPN”‘s anniversary with TV Insider.
Over the past two decades, we’ve all aged significantly. I’m not sure if I still have the energy for 22 more episodes of Supernatural. A mini-series sounds like an excellent idea instead.
Given that Supernatural ran for 15 seasons and could have potentially continued for another 15, had the characters not chosen to part ways, it’s understandable that a new full-fledged show might not be an option. Instead, a limited series provides fans with a glimpse into what the Winchesters are currently involved in, picking up from where the finale left off, possibly exploring Heaven or an alternate universe, similar to The Winchesters.
In my perspective, should we decide on a format for our show’s potential continuation, I believe it could lean towards a more raw and R-rated style. The constraints of network television don’t allow for full expression, and I firmly believe that Supernatural could truly soar if given the chance to push boundaries even further. If the “Ghostfacers” episode from Season 3 serves as any preview, I’m confident that Sam and Dean would relish the opportunity to let loose with some colorful language. Moreover, the overall tone would undergo a significant shift, as the Dean character has hinted at.
As a die-hard fan of this series, I’ve pondered about its potential transformation if it had been aired on a streaming platform. It would’ve undeniably taken on a grittier edge, leaning more towards an R-rating. Yet, there’s a part of me that wonders if altering the show’s established tone now could be misguided, perhaps even unfair to its long-standing essence. I can envision the advantages of maintaining the broadcast show format.
Now, I’d sure love to see that. However, it’s unknown if a revival will ever happen.
It’s quite plausible given their eagerness and the abundance of reboots and spin-offs on TV today. In fact, “Criminal Minds: Evolution” has been thriving on Paramount+ with its mature content and darker storylines while retaining the “Criminal Minds” fans are familiar with. Moreover, the “Supernatural” fanbase doesn’t appear to be fading anytime soon, so a revival might occur in the future.
In brief, it was earlier noted that Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins will be part of the cast in the fifth and last season of The Boys. This implies that viewers can expect them in a less family-friendly atmosphere compared to their work on Supernatural, yet just as engaging as ever. Filming for The Boys has concluded, so we can anticipate its release soon, exclusively on Amazon Prime.
In the meantime, I’ll be thinking about what could happen on this R-rated version of Supernatural.
