For nearly two years now, there have been challenges during the development of Plants vs. Zombies 3. After its initial announcement in 2019, it has faced multiple delays, setbacks, and testing phases. A recent buzz suggests that Plants vs. Zombies 3 may have been cancelled altogether, leaving supporters of the enduring franchise yearning for a change in ownership from publisher Electronic Arts.
The origin of this rumor can be traced back to the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit, where they shared a link to artist Gabriel Herrera’s ArtStation profile. Herrera appears to have contributed to the development of Plants vs. Zombies 3, mentioning that he “worked on high poly models, UVs, and bakes for some characters alongside an exceptional team. Regrettably, the game was scrapped.
As an avid fan, I must say that rumor has it that Herrera is working on Plants vs. Zombies 3, but let’s take this news with a generous pinch of salt until Electronic Arts (EA) officially confirms something definite. Even if Herrera is part of the team, EA might not be revealing all their plans just yet. The current version of PvZ 3 might have been canceled, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that EA has abandoned the game entirely. We’ll simply have to wait and see what EA has in store for us.
It’s not unanticipated that this rumor about Plants vs. Zombies 3 has surfaced, given the game’s history of fluctuation under Electronic Arts (EA) as they strive to perfect the franchise’s direction in future releases. Over the years, we’ve witnessed various transformations in PvZ 3, such as a significant shift in art style following its initial soft launch in 2020.
After the initial beta phase, Plants vs. Zombies 3 underwent a complete revamp and relaunched in 2021. However, it was removed from circulation again in 2022, leaving fans wondering about its fate. Speculation swirled that the game had been scrapped, but it resurfaced in early 2024. Later in the same year, Plants vs. Zombies 3 was taken down once more, this time for a significant update as Electronic Arts termed it.

After announcing a fan vote on their preferred art style earlier this year, the publisher has been relatively quiet about the game since then. Let’s hope Electronic Arts (EA) and developers at PopCap can find a solution to keep the Plants vs. Zombies 3 project alive. It would be unfortunate for fans of the franchise if the series were to end in this manner.
Indeed, the game Plants vs. Zombies has significantly evolved since its debut in 2009. We’ve seen the introduction of third-person multiplayer shooters and even a comic book series. However, it’s been over ten years since we’ve had a new tower defense sequel to Plants vs. Zombies 2.
EA and PopCap had an opportunity to return the series to its original essence and deliver the game fans were eagerly awaiting. Unfortunately, it appears that this attempt might not be successful, and it seems the experiment could come to an end soon. Hopefully, we’ll receive clear updates from EA and PopCap shortly, either laying the rumors to rest or confirming their accuracy.
