BioShock 4 May Have a Female Protagonist

The next BioShock game may feature a female lead, or at least that was the plan during development. Even after more than ten years since the last installment, the BioShock series remains incredibly popular with players. The original game captivated fans with its distinctive and unsettling underwater world, unique atmosphere, and powerful abilities. While only three BioShock games have been released—the most recent in 2013—their critical and commercial success has motivated Take-Two Interactive, the company that owns the franchise, to continue the series.

Man, I’ve been waiting ages for a new BioShock! It’s been almost a decade since they first started working on it, and we found out about it back in 2019 with this new studio, Cloud Chamber. The buzz is that it’s going to be set in Antarctica, and maybe even feature people who escaped Rapture. Honestly, I thought we’d have it by now, but we haven’t even seen a single trailer or screenshot. It sounds like development hasn’t been smooth sailing – they had some big changes in leadership earlier this year, which apparently pushed the release back to late 2027, or even further! I’m still hoping for a glimpse of it soon.

BioShock 4 Reportedly Featured a Female Protagonist at One Point

Because development on BioShock 4 has been ongoing for a long time, the game has gone through many changes. Actress Adriyan Rae recently shared with Daily Mail’s The Respawn that she originally worked on BioShock 4 at a studio in San Francisco, near Cloud Chamber. She worked on the project for a period of time before being assigned to South of Midnight.

An anonymous source told the actress she wasn’t sure if the game she worked on was actually BioShock 4. However, the actress mentioned the game featured superpowers, specifically telekinesis – the ability to move enemies with her mind – which strongly resembles the BioShock series. She clarified that due to non-disclosure agreements, she can’t confirm it’s BioShock. She might be retracting her statement after accidentally revealing too much, but it’s common for voice actors to be unaware of the full project details until late in development. It’s possible she never received confirmation and deduced it herself, especially considering the game hasn’t been released yet.

It’s possible the next BioShock game will feature a female lead, and the story may have changed, leading to a recasting of the role. While previous games starred male characters, players did control Elizabeth in a BioShock Infinite expansion. Another possibility is that the actress originally cast wasn’t playing the main character, as other characters in the game rarely use the special powers seen in the protagonist. Ultimately, we’ll probably have to wait a long time to learn the full story behind the next BioShock.
