The Joker is Batman’s greatest enemy. He first appeared in Batman #1 back in 1940 and has consistently challenged the Dark Knight and his friends, driving them to their limits. Considered one of DC’s most iconic villains – alongside truly evil beings like Darkseid and Eclipso – the Joker has committed terrible acts and caused immense suffering, all while seeming to enjoy it. He recently took his villainy to a new level in Absolute Batman #15, showing no signs of stopping his destructive behavior.
This issue revealed the disturbing origins of the Absolute Joker, showing he’s far more than just a criminal who had an accident. He’s a monstrous being that literally consumes his victims, even children, and has terrorized Gotham City since the 1880s. He can transform into a terrifying creature with sharp claws and rows of teeth, capable of killing someone in moments – all while laughing. This version of the Joker is drastically different from the one fans know, and that’s what makes him so compelling. The contrast between the two Jokers creates a fascinating opportunity to explore different facets of evil.
Evil In Two Very Different Forms

At his core, the Joker is a human being – a deeply disturbed and awful one, but human nonetheless. What makes him so frightening is precisely that fact. He wasn’t born a monster; he was once an ordinary person who was driven to the breaking point and transformed by a horrific accident. Now, he’s a twisted mockery of a human, reveling in suffering and embodying pure chaos. The Joker inspires fear because he represents what any of us could become, and his actions are so repulsive because they completely violate our sense of humanity.
Unlike the chaotic Joker most people know, the Absolute Joker thrives on strict order. He carefully infiltrated and manipulated the system from within, gaining power by controlling both sides of every conflict until he could do whatever he pleased. He isn’t simply driven mad; he’s a terrifying creature – impossibly tall and thin, fueled by the life force of orphaned children. He inspires fear by being an evil that defies comprehension, a level of cruelty akin to a nightmare boogeyman or a demon. He’s something beyond and beneath humanity, and that’s what truly frightens people.
The Evil You Know Versus the Evil You Can’t Understand

Although these two versions of the Joker share some personality traits and design elements, they are fundamentally different representations of evil. The main Joker embodies a human wickedness that feels relatable, while the Absolute Joker is a purely monstrous force driven only by causing suffering and beyond comprehension. These distinct types of villains allow for different explorations of Batman’s character and reflect the kinds of stories each universe – Prime and Absolute – aims to tell.
The Prime Joker pushes Batman’s beliefs to their limit. Batman always tries to redeem people and restore order, but the Joker’s chaotic nature resists improvement and actively seeks to destroy everything. The Absolute Joker, however, challenges Batman’s willpower. He’s a terrifying figure who built a system designed to harm and demean others. He represents everything Batman fights against, and relentlessly attacks him to break his spirit. Unlike the Prime Joker, the Absolute Joker won’t test what Batman believes in, but rather his determination to keep fighting even when victory seems impossible.
Ultimately, each Joker reflects the core differences between their Batman counterparts. The standard Batman focuses on simply saving the day, whereas the Absolute Batman is driven by the fight to save it. Though subtle, this distinction highlights the central themes of each universe. There are trade-offs to crafting the Jokers this way. A Joker with more human qualities forces Batman to confront his own ethics and risks losing public support, while a purely villainous Joker could make Batman seem too detached from humanity. After all, villains who are entirely evil can become predictable and boring. However, both Jokers perfectly complement their respective Batmen, and I’m excited to see what new challenges the Absolute Joker will bring.
