7 Superman Characters Ruined by the DC Movies

Over a significant period, Superman, a legendary figure in pop culture, has made numerous appearances in DC movies. Known as the Man of Steel, his diverse powers make him an impressive force, yet he seldom acts alone. Numerous versions of this character have graced live-action films, each portraying various incarnations of Superman’s friends, relatives, and colleagues. While some supporting characters in Superman’s world have received considerable focus in movie adaptations, the way their stories are handled sometimes results in unsatisfactory portrayals.

In numerous instances, the side characters in the Superman film series are often portrayed incorrectly, undermining the essence of the characters that form the backbone of the superhero’s legend. This can be attributed to alterations in key character traits, neglecting important aspects, or simply underutilizing their potential. As a result, many of Superman’s closest allies and adversaries have suffered significant damage in their film adaptations. However, with the DC Universe introducing new versions of crucial characters, there is hope for improvement in how these characters are handled in future Superman films. Historically, the portrayal of these characters in Superman movies has been less than satisfactory.

1) Perry White

Building a compelling Superman narrative relies heavily on the crafting of the world, and that process wouldn’t be complete without characters like Perry White. As the editor and boss of Clark Kent and Lois Lane at the Daily Planet, White plays a crucial role in the Superman films. His presence is subtly essential, as it supports Clark’s secret dual identity. Unfortunately, despite his frequent appearances in the supporting cast of Superman movies, White often falls short of being engaging or memorable for viewers.

2) Lex Luthor

Among the various Superman characters that Zack Snyder failed to portray accurately, none is as glaringly incorrect as Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor in the DCEU. This portrayal of Superman’s age-old adversary significantly distorted the character, creating a major misrepresentation in one of the most significant Superman adaptations in recent decades. This misguided representation left an indelible mark on fans of the DCEU as Luthor was perceived as an ineffective and peculiar villain with a strange writing style. The source material was mishandled, leaving a blemish on Luthor’s cinematic legacy that the DCU will have to address moving forward.

3) Lois Lane

In essence, Lois Lane plays a pivotal role as a supporting figure within the Superman universe, and her romantic ties with both Superman and Clark Kent are a significant aspect in his tales. However, film adaptations often only portray Lois as Superman’s love interest, neglecting other captivating aspects of her character. Despite being more fully developed in TV series based on Superman, the movies have yet to fully capture the complexity and depth of Lois Lane.

4) Darkseid

Although Darkseid may not be as popular as other DC Universe villains, there’s no denying his formidable strength against Superman. Unfortunately, despite his powerful reputation, his only on-screen portrayal so far was in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Regrettably, this representation didn’t fully capture the menacing essence of Darkseid, a shortcoming that many believe can be attributed to Snyder’s unrealized plans for the DC Extended Universe. Consequently, Darkseid’s live-action movie debut fell short, squandering the opportunity for him to truly establish himself as the formidable threat he ought to have been.

5) Jimmy Olsen

Jimmy Olsen might not be Superman’s most acclaimed sidekick in the comics, but he’s consistently featured in the Man of Steel’s tales. Unfortunately, movies have typically portrayed him as a clumsy colleague of Clark and Lois, rather than an essential ally to Superman and a crucial non-powered partner for the hero. Given the abundance of comic book stories where Olsen plays a significant role, it’s unfortunate that he has only served as comic relief in films up until now.

6) Doomsday

In the DCEU, several interpretations of Superman fell short, but perhaps none more so than that of Doomsday. This nearly invincible antagonist, introduced prematurely in the franchise’s hurried take on the Death of Superman storyline, had his background significantly altered to incorporate Lex Luthor’s genetic material. Unfortunately, this change diminished the original character. The live-action portrayal of Doomsday was underwhelming, failing to bring forth the most intimidating and intriguing elements of the villain.

7) Supergirl

Over time, numerous adaptations of Supergirl have graced our screens, but movies often fail to effectively portray this iconic character. The 1984 version of Supergirl, a DC adaptation, was universally panned, while the 2023 release of The Flash seemed more interested in using Supergirl as a substitute for Superman than developing her as an independent hero. Additionally, when she appeared as a supporting character in one of her most prominent roles in years, it did little justice to Supergirl, squandering the potential of one of DC’s strongest and underestimated superheroes.
