Originally intended for the PlayStation 1 about 30 years ago, Namco’s platform fighter, The Outfoxies, has finally been released on the console this week as part of Hamster’s Arcade Archives series.
If you’re not familiar with this 1995 title, you may be forgiven.
Created by Masateru Umeda for arcade systems, this game is often seen as an early inspiration for Super Smash Bros. due to its comparable viewpoint and how it’s played.
Choose from seven unique assassin characters and battle it out in 2D arenas, using a variety of over-the-top weapons to eliminate your opponents.

The game features some unusual characters, like Professor Ching, a scientist who uses a wheelchair, and Dweeb, who is a chimpanzee. It’s definitely a bit quirky and unconventional.
Although the game is well-regarded, it didn’t sell very well originally, and the planned PlayStation 1 version was never released. Now, however, it’s available to download on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 for around $16.99 or £13.99.
Just so you know, the PS5 version is part of the Arcade Archives 2 series and offers extra features like Time Attack mode, which aren’t available in the less expensive PS4 version. If you have the PS4 version, upgrading to the PS5 version will cost extra.
