Electronic Arts (EA) is permanently shutting down one of its major games within 24 hours. This means players who own the 2019 game will no longer be able to play its multiplayer modes, which make up a large part of the game. Unfortunately, even if someone wanted to buy the game to experience the multiplayer before it’s gone, or to play the single-player mode, it’s no longer available for purchase, as EA removed it from sale in 2023.
Over the past few months, EA has closed down several games without much explanation. For example, the 2019 racing game Grid hasn’t been available to buy for two years, and EA never said why it was removed from online stores. It’s likely the licenses for the game expired. Once a game is no longer for sale, EA has little reason to keep its servers running, as maintaining them is costly and can create security problems.
About the Game
Codemasters, the team behind many popular racing games, released Grid in 2019. It came out on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 11th. While reviews were generally positive, with scores between 73 and 79 on Metacritic, the game didn’t seem to sell very well.
Originally launched in 2009, this 2019 game is the fourth installment in the series. However, it’s not the latest – that would be Grid Legends, released in 2022. The future of the series, and of the studio Codemasters, remains uncertain. While rumors of the studio closing have circulated, EA has stated these reports are untrue.
Although Codemasters itself is currently safe, it appears the Grid racing series is likely on hold. This isn’t due to the recent studio changes, but because Grid Legends, the newest installment, didn’t perform as well as hoped. Before EA bought Codemasters in 2021, a future Grid game was possible. Now, under EA’s ownership, the series needs to be a major success to justify its existence, and it’s struggling to compete with higher-budget titles.
