Even eight years after Star Wars: The Last Jedi came out, Mark Hamill remains critical of how his character, Luke Skywalker, was killed off. The film sparked a lot of debate, and Hamill openly voiced his concerns during interviews at the time. He later said he regretted making those feelings public, explaining that disagreements about creative choices are normal, but usually kept behind the scenes. However, it appears Hamill still isn’t entirely happy with that part of the story, though he now seems to view the situation with a bit of humor.
Mark Hamill recently joked on CBS This Morning (as reported by Star Wars Holocron) that he thinks it’s ironic Luke Skywalker died from using too much of the Force. He’s mentioned this before, but this time he specifically pointed out that Obi-Wan and Yoda never warned Luke about the dangers of overusing his powers.
It’s surprising to learn that using the Force could be dangerous. You’d think Obi-Wan or Yoda would have cautioned Luke about potential risks, like using it too much. They never mentioned any of that! It seems they figured it wasn’t something he’d need to worry about, considering how things turned out for him – he died.
Overusing the Force Has Been a Thing in Star Wars for a Long Time
It’s worth noting that the issue of Jedi relying too much on the Force isn’t new. We’ve often seen Jedi struggle when using their powers, as if it physically takes a toll on them. The established idea is that a Jedi’s potential with the Force is linked to their midi-chlorian count, and pushing those abilities too far comes at a price.
The older stories about Star Wars, known as the Expanded Universe, explored the idea that Jedi were stronger if they didn’t rely too heavily on the Force. Authors like Timothy Zahn and Michael Stackpole thought it was better to use it sparingly. As the character Mara Jade, Luke Skywalker’s wife in those stories, put it, it’s difficult to connect with the Force’s subtle guidance when you’re constantly pushing it to its limits. Later stories shifted this idea, especially with Luke Skywalker demonstrating incredibly powerful Force abilities in the “Dark Nest Trilogy.” However, even then, using so much power came with a physical toll – there’s a scene where Luke visibly ages and weakens, in a way that strangely mirrors the Emperor Palpatine.
Because of all this, Luke’s death wasn’t as upsetting as it could have been. He had accepted his fate, and peacefully transitioned into the Force, becoming a spirit who could still help others. While Mark Hamill wasn’t thrilled with how Luke died, the Jedi Master found peace in his final moments, and his influence lives on as he continues to guide the next generation.
