16 Years Later, The Most Important Avatar Character Is Finally Revealed (And Their Look Isn’t Surprising)

James Cameron’s Avatar, which debuted in 2009, introduced a richly detailed and immersive world that stands alongside the greatest science fiction franchises. The film didn’t just present an alien planet with incredible plants and animals, but also a fascinating and complex culture. The sequels have further deepened this world, revealing layers of nuance within the Na’vi people that deserve to be explored. Even after three films, much of Avatar’s world remains a mystery. However, the newest movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, finally answers a major question that has been central to the entire series, and in doing so, introduces what appears to be the most important character so far. Be warned: spoilers ahead for Avatar: Fire and Ash!

The latest Avatar movie continues several storylines from the previous films, delving deeper into the world and its mythology. The biggest reveal centers around Eywa, the Na’vi deity, and her role on Pandora. After sixteen years of learning about Eywa’s power and influence, Avatar: Fire and Ash finally shows her to the audience, and her appearance will likely feel familiar to longtime fans.

Avatar: Fire and Ash Finally Reveals Eywa

In the first Avatar movie, the human characters are initially dismissive of Eywa, the sacred deity of the Na’vi people. Considering the film’s themes, it’s predictable that the beliefs of an indigenous population would be met with skepticism. However, the movie subtly suggests that Eywa is not only real but actively shapes everything on Pandora. This idea first appears when Neytiri prepares to kill Jake, but a woodsprite intervenes, which she sees as a sign from Eywa – an event that sparks their relationship and sets the stage for the entire story. This ultimately leads to the climactic battle where Pandora’s forest and creatures unite with the Na’vi to fight against the RDA, culminating in the powerful statement, “Eywa has heard you!”

In Avatar: The Way of Water, the spiritual connection to Eywa is explored further with the introduction of Kiri, Jake and Neytiri’s adopted daughter. Kiri was born from the avatar body of the late Dr. Grace Augustine, a surprising revelation that leaves unanswered questions about how that was even possible. Throughout the film, Kiri demonstrates a unique and powerful connection to Eywa, claiming she can actually feel it, and displaying abilities beyond those of other Na’vi – like controlling fish and underwater plants.

I was really captivated by Kiri’s story in Avatar: Fire and Ash. Throughout the movie, she keeps trying to connect with Eywa, even though it’s clearly hurting her. It’s so intense! Towards the end, when she reaches the underwater spirit tree, she makes one last, desperate attempt to reach out. And it actually works! With a little help from Spider, her brother, they manage to break through this kind of hidden, spiritual forest and finally connect with Eywa. It was a really powerful moment.

When we finally meet Eywa, she appears as a Na’vi, sharing the same features and hair as the other natives of Pandora. However, unlike them, she isn’t blue – she’s a glowing, pearly white and much taller than everyone else, giving her a divine and all-knowing presence. It’s somewhat unexpected that James Cameron chose to visually represent her, but it definitively confirms Eywa’s reality as the spiritual heart of Pandora. She is, without a doubt, real and ultimately triumphant.
