I’ve Wondered If Glinda Knows Elphaba Is Alive At The End Of Wicked: For Good, And Someone Asked Cynthia Erivo

The musical Wicked concludes with a touching, yet sad, farewell between Elphaba and Glinda as they part ways, set to the song “For Good.” Immediately after, the story shows Dorothy seemingly melting the Wicked Witch with water. However, Elphaba didn’t actually die; she secretly escaped with Fiyero or the Scarecrow. This raises a question: is Glinda aware of what really happened to her friend?

One of the most anticipated movies of 2025 doesn’t provide a definitive answer to a key question, instead letting viewers decide for themselves. Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba in the film, recently shared her own thoughts on what fans are discussing.

I really don’t believe she’s aware. In fact, I’m quite certain Glinda doesn’t know Elphaba is still alive, and I think someone wants to keep it that way.

Cynthia Erivo recently told Variety she believes Glinda in The Wizard of Oz actually knew her friend didn’t die when the house fell on her. While it’s a sadder take on the story, Erivo, who will star in Wicked, suggests it might be better for Glinda to remain in the dark.

Director Jon M. Chu hasn’t revealed what he thinks about how Wicked: For Good ends, saying he has a clear vision but wants audiences to draw their own conclusions. While the story seems to show Glinda believing Elphaba is gone, given what she witnessed, some argue that Glinda’s magical abilities might lead her to suspect otherwise.

Cynthia Erivo also discussed another part of how the movie Wicked: For Good ends. She explained her perspective by saying:

When the book finally opened for her, it wasn’t just about access—it showed she was deserving of its power, just as Elphaba had said. She possessed the ability now, and needed to learn how to control and use it for good, to truly make a difference. This magic had to have meaning, and she had to discover how to integrate it into her life. She hadn’t experienced magic before, but now she had the chance to understand and wield it.

Cynthia Erivo believes that when Glinda gives the Grimmerie to the Wicked Witch, the Witch no longer needs it because she’s already mastered her own magic. This creates a touching moment for Ariana Grande’s character, who has struggled to access her powers since childhood. Erivo was particularly surprised by the expanded and more developed storyline for Glinda in For Good, along with all the other new elements added to the popular musical.

Despite not receiving the same critical praise as the first film, Wicked: For Good has become a major box office success, earning $475 million worldwide and landing among the year’s top 15 highest-grossing movies (according to Box Office Mojo). Our review awarded it 4 out of 5 stars. While the movie leaves a few questions unanswered, particularly regarding Glinda’s knowledge, it cleverly sparks discussion about what might happen in a potential continuation of the story.
